Kings Bowing in Service
Guru Ashtakam 5
Meaning · English
Hosts of kings and rulers everywhere always serve his feet. If his mind is not set on the guru's lotus feet, what then, what then, what then, what then?
Picture someone so powerful that kings, and the rulers over kings, wait on him across the whole earth, and not once but all the time. Serving someone at their feet was the old sign of rank. The hymn calls his feet lotus feet, and then uses the very same word for the guru's feet. The question is where his own mind rests. If it is not resting at the guru's feet, all that homage still adds up to nothing much. The repeated 'what then' asks what any of it comes to.
Think of a clerk at a busy ticket counter. The queue stretches out the door, and every face in it is turned toward him. Yet his own eyes keep drifting to the clock. Everyone facing you tells you nothing about which way you yourself are facing. The kings face the man. The verse asks where he faces.
