Fame Spread by Giving

Guru Ashtakam 6

Meaning · English

My generosity has carried my name in every direction; the world's goods sit in my hand. If the mind is not fixed at the guru's lotus feet, then what?

This is the portrait of someone who gives freely, and whose giving has made them known everywhere. People in every direction speak of their open hand. Through that same good fortune, whatever the world offers is within reach. Nothing here is mocked. Generosity is a real good, and the fame it brings is honestly earned. Then comes the line that closes every verse. If the mind has not settled at the guru's feet, what does all of it come to? The question is asked four times and left unanswered.

Picture a kitchen stocked to the ceiling: good rice, fresh vegetables, spices in neat jars, every pot you could want. The stove has never been lit, so nothing ever gets cooked and nobody eats. The full shelves are the fame and the goods in hand. The lit flame is the mind resting at the guru's feet.
