Detachment Without an Anchor

Guru Ashtakam 7

Meaning · English

My mind clings to no pleasure, no yoga, no fine horses, no lover's face, no wealth. If it is not held at the Guru's lotus feet, what then, what then?

The list here is of things the mind has stopped wanting. Enjoyment no longer pulls at it. Neither does yoga, the practice or the powers people chase through it. Fine horses, a lover's face, money: none of it holds the mind. That sounds like a finished renunciant. The hymn says it is not finished. Letting go is not the same as arriving. If the mind has emptied itself and still has not come to rest at the Guru's feet, the same question stands: what then?

Picture a boat untied from every post on the dock. No rope holds it to the shore anymore. But with no mooring ahead and no one steering, it just drifts. Cutting loose from pleasure, money and horses is the untying. The Guru's feet are the place the boat is meant to come in to.
