Not Even the Forest
Guru Ashtakam 8
Meaning · English
My mind clings to no forest, no home, no work, no body, nothing priceless. Yet if it does not cling to the guru's lotus feet, what then, what then?
The list now reaches past possessions. The mind no longer leans on the forest, where people go to renounce the world, or on the comfort of home. It is not caught up in work, not even in its own body, not in some treasure beyond price. That sounds like arrival. The refrain disagrees. A mind loosened from every hold but not settled at the guru's feet has only been emptied. Free of things is not the same as held by something.
A kite whose string has snapped clears the tree, the rooftop and the power lines. Nothing snags it anymore. But nothing holds it either, and it tumbles wherever the wind goes. The mind free of forest, home and body is that kite; the guru's feet are the hand on the string.
