The Reciter's Reward
Guru Ashtakam 9
Meaning · English
Whoever of good merit reads this hymn to the guru, monk, king, student or householder, mind fixed on the guru's words, gains the longed-for state known as the Absolute.
The hymn closes with a promise, and the promise has two parts. First, who it is for: a person of good merit from any walk of life. The list covers them all: the monk, the ruler, the young student, the married person running a home. Second, the condition. Reading is not enough on its own. The mind has to be fastened to what the guru actually said. For that reader, the hymn names its reward: the goal they longed for, the state known as the Absolute.
Picture one map handed to four travellers: a monk, a king, a student and a parent. The same map serves each of them. But only the one who keeps looking at it while walking arrives. The hymn is the map anyone may hold. The mind kept on the guru's words is the walking.
