Who Needs Cleansing First
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2.21
Meaning · English
The person heavy with fat and phlegm does the six actions first. Another, who is not, does not practise them, because the humours stand in balance.
The Pradipika opens a small door here. Before breath practice proper, it says, some people do the six cleansings, and others leave them alone. The six cleansings are the shatkarma, the body-washing practices of hatha yoga. The next verse names them. Take the terms one at a time. Meda is fat, the body's soft, heavy tissue. Shleshma is phlegm, the moist, sticky quality the tradition places in the chest, throat and head. The text says the person in whom these two are in excess does the six first. It gives the order plainly: the cleansings come before the breath work, not as a rule for all. Then comes the other half. Anyone else does not do them. The reason given is that the doshas are in balance. The doshas are the three humours of the tradition's account: wind, bile and phlegm. Where they already sit level, there is nothing for the cleansings to correct. The Jyotsna adds its own reading. It says the cleansings belong before the practice of pranayama, the breath control, and not during it. It also names the three humours as the ones meant by the word for balance. So the text asks a practitioner to look at their own body first and ask whether the cleansings are needed at all. For most people the text's answer is no. These practices can injure someone who does them from a page, so they are learnt only with a teacher.
A man in his fifties sits in the family doctor's room. He is heavy around the middle and often clears his throat. He asks whether some deep cleansing would set him right. The doctor does not offer one. She talks about food, walking, sleep and what is causing the mucus. That is roughly where today's understanding stands. Body fat and airway mucus are two separate matters, and the old pairing of them under one humour has no modern match. Weight is managed through eating, movement and sleep. Mucus is made by healthy airways and only becomes a trouble through things like infection, allergy, smoke or reflux. Nothing well established shows that the cleansings are needed for either. One point does agree. Rinsing the nose with clean, lukewarm, boiled-then-cooled saltwater is a common, ordinary suggestion from doctors. The stomach-washing and enema practices are a different matter. Medicine does not recommend them, and they carry real risks. The verse's sound instinct is that a practice should fit the person, not be given to everyone alike. The doshas themselves are the tradition's account, not something a doctor measures.
