Meaning · English

Then dhauti: a strip of cloth four finger-widths across and fifteen hand-spans long, wetted, is slowly swallowed by the path the guru has taught. Then it is drawn out again. This is what is called the work of dhauti.

Dhauti comes from a root meaning to wash. It is the first of the six cleansings, the shatkarma, and the text now says how it is done. The cloth is four angulas wide. An angula is a finger-width, so about a hand's breadth less the thumb. It is fifteen hastas long. A hasta is a hand-span, the length from elbow to fingertip in some counts, so the strip is very long. The cloth is wetted and then swallowed slowly, in small amounts. Then it is pulled back out. The Pradipika adds one phrase that matters more than the measures: the way the guru has taught. The text does not describe the method itself. It hands that to the teacher. The commentary reads the cloth as fine, damp and slightly warm, cut from new turban cloth. It also adds a schedule that the verse itself does not give: a little more length each day, two spans on the second day, three on the third, and so on. That is the commentary's account of how a student builds up. The reason for the whole practice sits in the verses around it, where the six cleansings are said to purify the body. This verse only says what dhauti is and how it is entered: slowly, and under a guru.

The text gives no account of what happens inside, so what follows is the tradition's picture and plain anatomy kept apart. The tradition treats dhauti as a washing of the passage that runs from mouth to stomach, clearing what it calls kapha, the heavy, sticky humour. That is the tradition's account. In body terms, a damp cloth is passed down the gullet and held in the stomach. The throat has a strong gag reflex, and the muscles of the gullet and stomach respond to a long object passing through them. The practice is therefore a training of that reflex, which is why the text insists on slowness and a teacher: the body is asked to accept something it normally rejects. The breath stays easy and through the nose. Tension, hurry or a held breath makes the throat close. The mind has one task, which is steady, unhurried attention to a sensation most people avoid. The text offers no more detail, and this page does not either, because the details are the part that must be shown in person.

The Pradipika places dhauti among the six cleansings that it says purify the body, and it speaks of them as kept secret and honoured by the best of yogis. In the verse that follows this one, it claims that dhauti removes a list of disorders, including twenty kinds of kapha trouble. Those claims are the text's own, and this page does not repeat them as cures. The text promises no benefit for the single verse beyond what it says of dhauti in general: that done as taught, it cleanses.

A woman in her sixties, long used to a morning glass of warm water and a walk, hears that her teacher's teacher once swallowed a strip of cloth. That is the nearest thing in this book to something no family doctor would suggest. Today's mainstream medicine knows the gag reflex as a protection of the airway, and swallowing a long object deliberately carries real risks: choking, injury to the throat and gullet, and a cloth that lodges or knots. Medicine has no evidence that the stomach needs this kind of washing, since the body clears its own lining. There is no modern match for kapha as a substance to be removed. What is agreed is milder. Slow, unhurried attention to the body, and practice under someone who can watch, are sound ideas anywhere. As for the cloth itself, a doctor would more likely say to leave it out.

This is not taught from a page, and it is not a practice to try alone from a description. A cloth swallowed wrongly can cause choking, gagging with vomiting, or injury to the throat and gullet, and it can be hard to bring back. Anyone with a stomach or gullet problem, a hiatus hernia, reflux, a recent operation, high blood pressure, heart trouble, or who is pregnant, has good reason to leave it out. So does anyone unwell or weak. The text itself says it must be learnt by the guru's way, and the commentary's daily lengthening is no reason to hurry. A teacher corrects what a page cannot. Stop at once if there is pain, choking or distress.
