Bhishma tells of how a group of virtuous ascetics found the princess Amva in the woods. They were concerned for her and debated what to do. Some suggested she return to her father, some wished to reproach Bhishma, and others thought they should ask the ruler of the Salwas to accept her. However, others reminded them that Salwa had already rejected her. Eventually, the ascetics urged Amva to return to her father's house in Kasi. They told her that as a woman, she had no protector other than her father or husband, and that the life of a forest dweller was too painful for a delicate princess. They warned her that if she remained alone in the solitary woods, kings might court her.
Amva replied that she could not return to Kasi. She feared that if she went back to her father's home, she would be disregarded and shamed by all her relatives. She explained that she had lived there during her childhood, but she could not go back now. Instead, she told the ascetics that she wished to practice rigorous austerities. She hoped that by dedicating herself to a life of penance, she could avoid such sore afflictions in her future lives. While the Brahmanas were considering her request, a royal sage named Hotravahana entered the forest. The other ascetics welcomed him with the traditional rites of hospitality, offering him a seat and water before they began to speak of the maiden's distress.
Hotravahana felt great pity and grief upon hearing Amva's story and seeing her emaciated state. He took the maiden on his lap to comfort her and asked her to explain her situation in detail. After listening to her full account, he told her not to return to her father's home, for he was the father of her mother. He promised to dispel her grief and advised her to seek out Rama, the son of Jamadagni. He told Amva that Rama was a sage of great energy, like the Yuga-fire itself. Hotravahana assured her that Rama would resolve her affliction and would even slay Bhishma in battle if Bhishma did not obey his behest.
Amva saluted her maternal grandsire but asked how she could possibly find this celebrated sage and how he would be able to remove her grief. Hotravahana explained that Rama was devoted to truth and lived among other Rishis, Gandharvas, and Apsaras on Mount Mahendra. He told her to tell Rama that Hotravahana had sent her. He assured her that Rama was a dear friend who would do everything for her. As he spoke, a companion of Rama named Akritavrana arrived. The sages and Hotravahana greeted him with hospitality. After they had spent some time in delightful discourse, Hotravahana asked Akritavrana where Rama could be found.
Akritavrana replied that Rama often spoke of Hotravahana as a dear friend and would likely arrive there the next morning. He then asked who the maiden was and why she had come to the woods. Hotravahana explained that she was Amva, the eldest daughter of the king of Kasi. He recounted how Amva and her sisters, Amvika and Amvalika, were holding their Swayamvara when Bhishma abducted them by force. Bhishma had taken them to Hastinapura for his brother Vichitravirya. However, Amva told Bhishma that she had already chosen the lord of the Salwas in her heart. Bhishma had then dismissed her with Satyavati's consent, allowing her to go to Salwa.
Hotravahana continued, explaining that when Amva approached Salwa and asked him to marry her, the king rejected her because he suspected the purity of her conduct after she had been taken by Bhishma. Amva herself confirmed this, stating that she could not return to her city for fear of disgrace. She told Akritavrana that she had determined her highest duty was now whatever the holy Rama might point out to her. Akritavrana asked her which of her two afflictions she sought a remedy for. He asked if she wanted Rama to urge Salwa to wed her, or if she wished to see Bhishma defeated in battle by the intelligent Rama Bhargava.
Amva explained that Bhishma had acted out of ignorance because he did not know she had already given her heart to Salwa. She asked Akritavrana to decide what was just and proper to do toward Bhishma, Salwa, or both. Akritavrana observed that if Bhishma had not taken her by force, Salwa would have married her at Rama's behest. He argued that it was Bhishma's actions that had awakened Salwa's suspicions and that Bhishma was too proud of his success. He advised Amva that her vengeance should fall on Bhishma alone. Amva agreed, admitting she had cherished the desire to see Bhishma slain in battle, and asked the sage to punish whoever was guilty.
The next day, Rama arrived, beaming with energy and dressed in deer-skins with his bow, sword, and battle-axe. The ascetics and Hotravahana welcomed him with honey and curds. After some discourse, Hotravahana introduced Amva as his granddaughter and told Rama that she needed his help. Amva knelt at Rama's feet and wept. Rama asked what grief was in her heart and promised to act according to her words, and she begged for protection from the ocean of sorrow. Rama, moved by pity at her beauty and distress, asked her to tell him everything. Amva recounted her story, and Rama promised that he would send word to Bhishma. He told her that if Bhishma did not obey his behest, he would consume him and his counsellors in battle, or, if she wished, he could instead speak to the ruler of the Salwas.
Amva urged Rama to slay Bhishma without delay, calling him covetous and proud. Rama hesitated, explaining that he did not take up arms except for the sake of those conversant with the Vedas or at the command of Brahmanas. He told her that both Bhishma and Salwa were obedient to him and that he could make Bhishma carry her feet on his head if she wished. However, Amva insisted that only the death of Bhishma would satisfy her. Akritavrana then intervened, reminding Rama of his vow to protect those who came to him in fright and to slay any proud warrior who vanquished all the Kshatriyas of the earth.
Rama remembered his vow but said he would first try conciliation, and decided to take Amva with him to see Bhishma. He resolved that if Bhishma remained arrogant and did not obey his behest, he would slay him. He noted that his arrows pass through bodies rather than sticking in them, a fact known from his previous encounters with the Kshatriyas. The group passed the night there, and the next morning they performed their homa-rites and recited prayers. Then Rama and the devotees of Brahma set out from the asylum. They traveled to Kurukshetra and quartered themselves on the banks of the stream of Saraswati, with Amva in their company.
