The story · English

The divine Madhusudana, having fixed his resolve, stepped forward to face the wrestler Chanura, and Balarama, the son of Rohini, faced Mushtika. Krishna gripped the giant's hands in his own and locked his feet with the wrestler's, pulling with all his might in a fierce struggle for victory. They clashed knee against knee and head against head, circling and shifting, pushing and pulling, each trying to overpower the other. As they wrestled in the royal court, the women watching from the stands grew concerned. They whispered among themselves that this was a great injustice; it was wrong for the court to allow such a match. They looked at the wrestlers and saw a stark contrast: Chanura and Mushtika were like mountains, their limbs hard as diamonds, while the two brothers were delicate youths who had not yet reached full manhood.

The women continued to marvel at Krishna's beauty. They noticed his face, like a blooming lotus, glistening with beads of perspiration, and the coppery-red eyes of Balarama, his face lit with laughter and anger as he faced Mushtika. They said the land of Vraja was blessed, for there the Primeval Person, hidden in human form, played with Balarama, tending cows and playing his flute. They spoke of how the women of Vraja would rush from their homes just to catch a glimpse of his compassionate face and smiling mouth. Hearing these women speak, Krishna decided it was time to end his enemy. Nearby, his own parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, hearing the women's fearful words, grieved in their love for their sons, unaware of the strength the young boys possessed.

The fight intensified. Krishna struck Chanura with blows as hard as thunderbolts, leaving the wrestler exhausted and reeling. In a desperate rage, Chanura leaped like a hawk, clenched both his fists, and struck Krishna in the chest. But Krishna did not budge; it was as if a great elephant had been hit by a mere garland of flowers. Seizing Chanura by the arms, Krishna whirled him around and dashed him violently against the ground. Chanura fell, his life extinguished, his hair and garlands spilling out like the banner of Indra. Simultaneously, Mushtika struck Balarama first with his fist, and Balarama hit him hard with his open palm. Mushtika trembled, vomited blood and fell lifeless, like a tree blown down by the wind.

Then Balarama killed the wrestler Kuta playfully, with contempt, using his left fist. At that moment Krishna struck Shala on the head with the front of his foot, and Toshala was split in two; both fell dead. Seeing their leaders fallen, the remaining wrestlers fled for their lives. The brothers drew their cowherd friends to them and danced and played as instruments sounded, their anklets ringing. Everyone rejoiced except Kansa, and the brahmanas and holy men cried, 'Well done! Well done!' Seeing his champions destroyed, Kansa silenced his own music and screamed in fury. He ordered his guards to drive the sons of Vasudeva out of the city, to seize the cowherds' wealth, to seize Nanda and chain him, and to put Vasudeva and his own father Ugrasena to death. But as Kansa shouted these threats, Krishna leaped with incredible speed, jumping high into the air to reach the tyrant's elevated throne.

Kansa, seeing death approaching, grabbed his sword and shield and darted left and right like a hawk in the sky. But Krishna seized him as Garuda seizes a snake, gripped him by the hair, threw him from the high dais onto the arena floor and fell upon him. Then he dragged the lifeless body like a lion dragging an elephant, as the whole assembly cried out. Kansa, who had thought of the Lord constantly out of fear, attained his form. His eight younger brothers, Kanka, Nyagrodhaka and the others, rushed forward in rage, but Balarama raised a club and killed them, like a lion among deer. Drums sounded in the sky; Brahma, Shiva and the other gods showered flowers, and celestial women danced. Krishna comforted the weeping wives of Kansa and his brothers, had the funeral rites performed for the dead, and freed Devaki and Vasudeva from their bonds. The two boys bowed low at the feet of their parents, but Devaki and Vasudeva, knowing them to be the Lords of the Universe, did not embrace their sons, for they were apprehensive.
