The story · English

Once Kansa had fallen, Krishna saw that his parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, had come to know who he truly was. He did not want this, so he spread his maya over them, letting them love him simply as their son. Together with his elder brother Balarama he approached them and, bowing with deep humility, said, 'Father, Mother, please forgive us. We have been far from you, not by choice, but because we were trapped by Kansa's cruelty. For a son not to serve his parents is a great loss; it is as if those days were spent in vain. We were dependent on another, while you suffered so much at the hands of that wicked man.' His parents took the two boys onto their laps and embraced them, bathing them in tears, too choked to speak a word.

With his parents comforted, Krishna turned to the governance of the city. He restored the crown to his maternal grandfather Ugrasena, the Yadava king. Krishna said to him, 'O Great King, you may now command me and the people as you wish. Because of the ancient curse of Yayati, the Yadavas should not hold the throne. While I wait upon you as your servant, even the gods will bow and bring you tribute, let alone other kings.' He then gathered all the kinsmen of the Yadus, Vrishnis, Andhakas, and others who had fled in fear of Kansa. He brought them home and provided for them with wealth, ensuring they lived in peace again.

Then Krishna and Balarāma went to Nanda, who was still in Mathura, and embraced him. Krishna spoke tenderly to Nanda. 'Father, you and Yasoda raised us with such care,' he told him. 'Parents love their children even more than they love themselves, and those who raise as their own the children whose kin could not care for them are the true father and mother. Go back to Vraja, all of you, father. Once we have made our well-wishers happy, we will come to see our kinsmen.' He honoured Nanda and the people of Vraja with clothes, ornaments and vessels. Nanda, overwhelmed with emotion, embraced them both with tears in his eyes and returned to Vraja with the cowherds, while the brothers stayed behind. Vasudeva then had the priest and brahmins perform the brothers' dvija rites. The wise Vasudeva gave the brahmins cows adorned with gold necklaces, with their calves, and also the cows he had promised in his mind at the boys' births, which Kansa had wrongly taken. The brothers received the Gayatrī mantra from Garga, the teacher of the Yadus.

Seeking deeper knowledge, the brothers traveled to Avanti to study under a teacher named Sāndipani. Despite being the lords of the universe, they lived as humble students, serving their guru with devotion. Hearing each subject only once, they mastered the Vedas with their limbs and Upanishads, archery with its secrets, dharma, the paths of reasoning, logic and six-fold statecraft; in sixty-four days and nights they learned the sixty-four arts. Sāndipani was amazed by their supernatural intellect. When it came time to pay the teacher's fee, the guru, after consulting his wife, made a heartbreaking request: he asked them to bring back his son, who had been swallowed by the ocean at Prabhāsa. The brothers set out in a great chariot and reached the shore, where the ocean, recognising them, brought them offerings. Krishna ordered it to give back the boy it had seized with a great wave.

The ocean explained that a demon named Panchajana, who lived in the form of a conch shell, had seized the boy. Krishna dove into the waters and slew the demon, but did not find the boy in its belly. He took the demon's shell as his own divine conch. Then, to fetch the boy, Krishna and Balarāma went to Samyamani, Yama's beloved city, where Krishna blew the conch with Balarāma beside him. Hearing it, Yama worshipped them with great devotion and asked what he could do. At Krishna's command he brought back the guru's son, who had been taken there by his own karma. The brothers gave the boy to Sāndipani and asked him to choose again. The guru said the fee was paid in full and blessed them: 'May your fame purify, and may the Vedas stay fresh for you here and hereafter.' Krishna and Balarāma then returned to their city, where the people rejoiced to see them after many days, like those who find wealth they had lost.
