The story · English

Krishna turned to Uddhava, his dearest friend and the most intelligent of the Vrishnis, who had studied under the great Brihaspati. Taking Uddhava by the hand, Krishna spoke with a heart full of longing. 'Go to Vraja, gentle Uddhava,' he said. 'Bring joy back to my father and mother. The Gopis are suffering in my absence; free them from this pain with my message. They have abandoned the duties of this world for my sake, considering me their own soul and their most beloved. In Gokula, these women are fainting from the agony of separation, clinging to the memory of me. They barely hold onto their lives, kept alive only by my messages promising that I will return.'

Uddhava accepted the mission with reverence and set out in his chariot toward Nanda's village. As he entered Vraja at sunset, his chariot hidden by the dust raised by the hooves of the returning herds, he saw a scene of rustic beauty. The air was filled with the loud bellows of strong bulls and the sounds of cows calling to their calves. He saw the white calves frolicking and heard the rhythmic sound of milking and the melody of flutes. The village was vibrant, adorned by Gopis and cowherds dressed in their finest ornaments, the Gopis singing of the auspicious deeds of Balarama and Krishna. The homes were filled with the scent of incense and lamps, where people offered worship to fire, the sun, guests, cows, the Brahmanas, the ancestors and the gods. The surrounding forests were in bloom, echoing with the songs of birds and the hum of bees, with swans and karandava ducks among the lotus ponds.

Nanda, seeing the dear companion of Krishna, embraced Uddhava with great joy. He provided him with the finest food and massaged his feet to ease his travel fatigue. Once rested, Nanda asked with longing, 'Is our dear friend Vasudeva, the son of Shura, well now that he is free, with his children and family, and faithful as ever to his friends?' Nanda spoke of the relief that Kansa, the enemy of the virtuous Yadus, had finally been killed by his own sins. 'Does Krishna still remember us?' Nanda wondered. 'Does he remember his mother, his friends, the cowherds, Vraja, the cows, Vrindavana and Govardhana hill? Will Govinda ever return to see his own people? I long to see that beautiful face and those smiling eyes once more.'

Nanda began to recount Krishna's childhood miracles, and Yasoda listened, tears of love in her eyes and milk flowing from her breasts. He spoke of how Krishna had protected them from forest fire, wind and rain, the bull and the serpent. He remembered how Krishna broke the mighty bow with one hand, held up the great Govardhana hill for seven days, and effortlessly killed the demon Pralamba, the bull-demon Arishta and the crane-demon Bakasura, until Nanda, overwhelmed with love, fell silent. Seeing their immense love, Uddhava told them, 'You are truly fortunate to have such a bond with Narayana, the teacher of the universe. Rama and Mukunda are the seed and the womb of all creation, the Purusha and the Pradhana. Anyone who remembers Narayana at the moment of death, leaving behind the burdens of karma, attains the highest spiritual goal.'

Uddhava comforted them, promising that Achyuta would return to Vraja soon to bring happiness to his parents. He explained that Krishna is the light within all beings, beyond the categories of kin, parents, or birth; he descends into the world for play and to protect the virtuous. As the night passed, the Gopis rose, lit the lamps and worshipped the household deities, then began the morning churning of butter, their jewelry clinking. Their songs of praise for the lotus-eyed Krishna filled the air, driving away all misfortune. At sunrise, the villagers noticed Uddhava's chariot and wondered if it was Akrura returning from Mathura. While the women were still talking, Uddhava, having finished his morning prayers, arrived.
