The story · English
When Uddhava arrived in Vraja, the women of the village were struck by his appearance. He had long arms, eyes like newly blossomed lotuses, and wore yellow garments with a garland of lotuses. His face glowed like a lotus and he wore shimmering earrings. Curious and amazed, the Gopis crowded around him, wondering who this handsome stranger was and why he was dressed exactly like their beloved Krishna. Recognizing him as a messenger from the Lord of Lakshmi, they treated him with great respect, welcoming him with gentle smiles and sweet words. They invited him to sit, eager to hear the secret message he had brought from Mathura, knowing that he had been sent by Krishna out of love for his own parents.
One Gopi, seeing a bee hovering nearby, was reminded of Krishna. Imagining it was a messenger sent by her beloved, she spoke to the bee, warning it not to touch her feet with whiskers smeared with kunkuma from Krishna's garland, crushed by a rival in the city. She lamented that Krishna had made them drink the nectar of his lips once and then abandoned them, as a bee leaves flowers. She asked why it sang so much of the leader of the Yadus, wondering if Krishna was now enchanted by the women of the city. Which women in heaven, on earth or below would be hard for him to win, she asked, when even Lakshmi worshipped the dust of his feet? Then, softening, she sighed, 'Dear friend, has my beloved sent you again? Does he ever speak of us, his maidservants?'
Uddhava listened and sought to console them with a divine message. He told them that their devotion was supreme, a rare gift that even great sages struggle to achieve. He delivered Krishna's words: 'I am never truly separated from you. Just as space, air, fire, water, and earth permeate all beings, I dwell within the mind, the breath, and the senses.' He explained the nature of the soul and the illusions of Maya. Krishna urged them to fix their minds on him through meditation, promising that by constantly remembering him, they would soon be reunited. He recalled that the Gopis kept back in Vraja from that night's dance in the forest had attained him simply by thinking of his prowess.
Pleased by the message, which stirred their memories, the Gopis spoke to Uddhava. They asked if Krishna now delighted the city women of Mathura, who worshipped him with shy smiles and generous glances. They wondered if he ever mentioned them among the royal ladies, or if he remembered the nights in Vrindavana under the moonlight, amidst the scent of Kumuda and Kunda flowers, when they danced together with tinkling anklets. They feared that Krishna, having attained a kingdom and married the daughters of kings, had no reason to return to the simple forest dwellers. Despite their despair, they admitted they could not forget him; every river, hill, and the sound of a flute in Vraja served as a painful reminder of the son of Nanda. Then Krishna's messages eased their fever of separation, and they honoured Uddhava as one with Krishna himself.
After several months of singing Krishna's stories to soothe the Gopis, Uddhava, having witnessed their absolute surrender, felt a deep humility. He realized that these simple village women had attained a state of love for the Divine that even the most learned scholars and yogis could only dream of, and he wished to be a shrub in Vrindavana touched by the dust of their feet. Then he took leave of the Gopis, Yasoda and Nanda, and bade farewell to the cowherds. As he boarded his chariot, Nanda and the others brought gifts and wept, praying that their hearts and bodies remain forever devoted to Krishna's lotus feet. Returning to Mathura, Uddhava bowed before Krishna, reported on the state of the people of Vraja, and gave their gifts to Vasudeva, Balarama and the king.
