The Vital Breath

Prashna Upanishad 4.3

Meaning · English

Only the fires of prāṇa stay awake in this city of the body. Apāna is the gārhapatya (householder's) fire, vyāna is the anvāhāryapacana (southern) fire, and prāṇa is the āhavanīya (offering) fire, so called because it is carried out from the gārhapatya.

While the senses and mind retreat during sleep, the breaths remain active. The verse describes them as the fires of the Vedic household sacrifice, which are never allowed to go out. Apāna is the householder's fire, vyāna is the southern fire, and prāṇa is the offering fire, carried forth from apāna just as the offering fire is lit from the householder's fire. So the breath-fires keep burning even when the conscious mind is offline.

A pilot light on a gas stove stays lit in the kitchen even when no one is cooking. This tiny, constant flame represents the vital breath, which keeps the body's engine warm and ready even while the conscious mind sleeps.
