Bhagavad Gita 4.16
Meaning · English
What is action, and what is inaction? Even the wise are confused about this. So I will explain to you what action is, and knowing it, you will be freed from what is inauspicious.
Two words carry the verse. Karma is action: anything done by body, speech or mind. Akarma is non-action, the word for what looks like doing nothing. Krishna's first claim is that the line between them is not obvious. Kavayah, the wise or the seers, are the people one would trust to know, and he says even they are mohita, bewildered, clouded, led astray in their judgment. A man sitting still may be busy inside, and a man at work may be untouched by it. Then he makes a promise to Arjuna: he will explain karma, and knowing it Arjuna will be freed from ashubha, what is inauspicious, meaning whatever binds and harms. The reason he gives is the problem Arjuna is in. Standing between two armies, Arjuna is tempted to drop his weapons and call that innocence. Krishna answers that choosing between acting and not acting is not yet understanding either one. What he asks of the listener is to hear the teaching out before deciding. On the commentators: Shankara reads the freedom as release from the cycle of rebirth, through seeing that the Self does not act. Ramanuja reads it as action rightly done becoming a means to knowledge of the Self. Madhva reads it as release gained through knowing God as the one who governs all action.
A man sits on a riverbank with a fishing rod, still as a post, and a stranger passing thinks he is idle. A few steps away a mill hand moves all day, yet his mind is far off and nothing he does is really his. Stillness and busyness are both only appearances. What counts is what lies underneath.
1. Pick one ordinary hour today, such as washing dishes, waiting in a queue or sitting on a bus. 2. During it, ask yourself two plain questions: what am I doing, and what is my mind doing? 3. Note one moment when your body was still but your mind was busy, and one when your hands were busy but your mind was elsewhere. 4. Write both down in a line each tonight. Do not judge them. Only name them.
A mother sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while her son is in surgery. She cannot do anything, and she feels she is failing him by doing nothing. Yet she is not idle. She is holding herself together, keeping her phone charged for the doctor, and answering her husband's calls. Krishna's claim is that the wise themselves find the line between acting and not acting hard to draw, so her confusion is not a flaw. The verse would let her ask what her waiting is made of. If it is dread rehearsing disasters, that is a kind of busyness that wears her out. If it is steady readiness, that is action of a quiet sort. Ordinary experience agrees that a person can be exhausted by a day spent seated, and rested after a day of work. The verse does not promise her son's recovery, ease her fear, or replace the surgeon. It only asks her to look at what she is actually doing before she judges herself.
