Breath Alone Is Enough

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2.37

Meaning · English

Some teachers say that all the impurities dry up through the breathing practices alone. For these teachers, no other practice is approved.

This line reports a disagreement. It does not give an order. Take the words one at a time. Pranayama is the work with breath: prana, the life-force the tradition places in the breath, and ayama, to lengthen or hold. Mala means impurity or waste. The verb says these impurities dry up completely, as a puddle does in the sun. Acharya means a teacher who has lived what he teaches. The other practice is the group of six cleansings, the shatkarma. The six are trataka, kapalabhati, dhauti, basti, neti and nauli. Trataka is steady gazing without blinking. Kapalabhati is the quick, forceful breathing just described. Dhauti cleans the stomach with a long strip of wet cloth that is swallowed and drawn out. Basti draws water or air into the lower bowel. Neti passes a thread or cord through the nose and out at the mouth. Nauli rolls the abdominal muscles side to side. This page does not teach dhauti, basti, neti or nauli. They go into the body's passages and are learnt only beside a teacher, and anyone with a weak stomach, bowel or nose should not attempt them from words. The Pradipika gives no argument for this view. The commentary reads the word for "alone" as shutting out the six, and takes "impurities" as a sample that also covers heaviness, phlegm and bile. It names Yajnavalkya and others as the teachers who hold it. So the text admits that serious teachers did without the cleansings.

A man rinses his nose at the basin on a cold morning, as his doctor once suggested, and then sits down to breathe slowly. That small scene holds two ideas the verse sets side by side. Plain saline rinsing is something family doctors do suggest for some people. It is far gentler than a thread drawn through the nose, which can cause bleeding and injury if done badly. Swallowing cloth and washing out the bowel are not routine advice today. Used carelessly they can hurt, and the body clears its own waste through the liver, kidneys, bowel, skin and lungs without them. Slow breathing is well accepted as a way to settle the body and mind. Nothing known shows that it dries up impurities. The word mala has no match in modern medicine, and neither do the tradition's phlegm and bile as stored faults. The idea that breath alone could do the work is the tradition's claim. What can be said fairly is that gentle practice carries less risk than forceful cleansing.
