Meaning · English
Dhauti, basti, neti, lauliki, trataka and kapalabhati: these are the six acts of cleansing. Let a person carry them out. The text opens the section under the heading 'now, cleansing'.
Gheranda begins his teaching with a list. Shatkarma is shat, six, plus karma, action: the six actions. Gheranda puts them first, under a heading that simply says 'now, cleansing'. Here is each one, briefly. Dhauti means washing. It cleans the digestive passage, and the next verses split it into four kinds. Basti is a yogic enema, a cleansing of the lower gut, traditionally done in water. Neti cleans the nose, with water or a thread. Lauliki, better known as nauli, is a rolling, churning movement of the belly muscles. Trataka is steady gazing without blinking at one point until the eyes water. Kapalabhati is kapala, skull, plus bhati, shining or making bright: a quick, forceful breathing that the tradition says clears the head. The verse gives no method and no reason. It only names the six and says they are to be practised. The reason comes in the next verses, where the body is called a pot that must be made clean before the other work begins. What it asks of a practitioner differs by item. Dhauti, basti, neti and nauli use cloth, water, thread or strong muscle control, and they can injure someone who learns them from a page. They are learnt only beside a teacher. Trataka and kapalabhati are gentler, but they still call for care, and anyone with eye, heart, lung or pregnancy concerns, or a tendency to dizziness, needs a teacher first.
A woman stands at her bathroom basin in pollen season, tilting her head over a saline rinse for her blocked nose. This is the one cleansing here that a family doctor will readily recognise. Rinsing the nose with salt water is common, mainstream advice. The water must be boiled and cooled or distilled, because plain tap water can carry organisms that should not reach the nose. The rest is less settled. The gut cleans itself, and medicine has no evidence that routine washing of the bowel or stomach is needed. Repeated enemas can disturb the body's salts, and swallowing a cloth risks choking or injury. Nauli is a real feat of abdominal muscle control, but the health claims made for it are the tradition's own. Gazing at a point is a plain attention exercise and can leave the eyes dry or tired. Fast forced breathing can cause light-headedness. The idea of shodhana, purification, has no direct modern counterpart. Today's medicine speaks of hygiene, digestion and breathing, not of a pot of the body being made clean.
