Heart of Every Power

Vijnana Bhairava 162

Meaning · English

The heart of all the many divisions of Shakti is known today. Having said this, the delighted Devi clung to Shiva's neck.

Three words carry it. Shakti is power, the capacity to act, to perceive, to take any form. Prabheda means division: power split into its many kinds and distinctions. Hridaya is heart, the center that every branch grows from. So the first line says she now knows what sits at the center of all the separate powers, not each one on its own. Then the word today: this knowing has arrived at a particular moment, in the middle of a conversation. The second line is plain. Having said it, she is glad, and she holds on to Shiva by the neck. Nothing else is added to her words; the gladness shows in the body, not in an argument. By the text's own logic, the many powers are the ordinary stuff of any moment: seeing, wanting, hearing, doing. Each has the same center. Finding that center needs no new moment, only the one already happening, opened from inside. Her closeness to Shiva shows the knowing is not kept apart from him.

Look at a bicycle wheel. Dozens of thin spokes fan out in every direction, each seeming to be its own line. Follow any one inward and it ends in the same small hub. The spokes are the many kinds of power; the hub is the heart she says she now knows.
