Satisfied By the Essence
Vijnana Bhairava 161
Meaning · English
God of gods, great god, Shankara, I am fully satisfied. Today I have grasped the essence of the Rudrayamala Tantra.
Three words carry it. Deva-deva means god of gods, the one above the other gods. Mahadeva means great god. Shankara means the one who brings peace, a name of Shiva. She calls him by all three before she says anything else. Then comes paritripta, fully satisfied, filled to the point of wanting nothing more. Sara is the essence, the heart of a thing, what is left when the rest is set aside. Avadharita means grasped and fixed in the mind, held, not just heard. So the clauses run in order. She addresses him. She says she is satisfied. She says she has taken in the essence of the Rudrayamala Tantra today, not at some later time. The question she began with has been answered, and she says so plainly. The text treats this as the right close to a teaching: what was taught is received, and the one receiving can say that her asking has ended. Nothing in the verse adds a new practice. Its logic is that the teaching worked on the ordinary moment of hearing, from inside it, until the listener found she had what she came for. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here.
You ask a cook how to make a dish, and you stand at the stove for an hour watching. Then you taste the pot and put the spoon down, because nothing is missing. The tasting is her satisfaction. The taste is the essence she says she has taken in, known by having it, not by a list of steps.
