The Steady Wealth

Vijnana Bhairava 160

Meaning · English

Let all of this go and take hold of this, doe-eyed one. What use are these unsteady things, Devi? This is the steady, highest wealth. Even life-breaths may be given away, but the supreme nectar is not to be given.

A few words carry it. Parityajya is letting go on every side: pari is all around, tyaj is to leave. Asthira is what does not stand still, and sthira is what does. Amrita is nectar, literally not-death, and parama makes it the highest. Now the clauses, in order. Bhairava tells Devi to drop all this and take hold of this one thing. He asks what use the unsteady things are. Then he names what he is offering: the steady, highest wealth. The last line sets two losses side by side. Life-breaths can be handed over, and he says so plainly. The supreme nectar cannot be handed over at all. So the verse sorts what a person holds into two kinds. Village, kingdom, family and even breath come and go. One thing stays put. It works as a doorway by the text's own logic because it is not somewhere else. It is opened from inside the ordinary moment Devi is already in, which is why it cannot be passed across like property.

Picture a traveler at a station with six bags, each one shifting and sliding as the crowd pushes past. In her pocket is the one key to her own door. She spends the whole trip guarding bags and forgets the key. The bags are the unsteady things, and the key is the steady wealth, which is small and already on her.
