Giver and Receiver Are One

Vijnana Bhairava 153

Meaning · English

With whatever substances the one both higher and lower is honored or pleased, and whoever the honorer may be, all of it is that same one. Where, then, is the act of worship?

Three words carry it. Pujana is worship: honoring someone by placing things before them. Dravya is the substance offered, such as flowers, water or food. Parapara joins para, beyond, with apara, near or lower, so it names the one who is both the far and the close. Eka is simply one. Now the clauses. Whatever things are used to honor or please that one, they are not outside it. Whoever the worshipper is, that person is not outside it either. The offering, the one pleased and the one offering are all a single being. The closing question follows from this: where is worship? Worship needs a gap, someone here and someone there with a gift crossing between them, and the verse finds no gap. This works as a doorway because the ordinary moment is already the place. Any reaching toward a god, any act of offering, is taken apart from inside. Nothing needs to be added or fetched. The question is left open to the sitter, and it asks only where the separation was ever standing.

Think of pouring water over your own hands to wash them. One hand tips the jug, the other catches, and it seems like service passing from one to the other. But both are yours and the water was always yours. The giving, the receiving and the washed hands are one body, which is what the verse says of worshipper, offering and the one worshipped.
