Bathing in the Self

Vijnana Bhairava 152

Meaning · English

The self, on every side, is nothing but free joy and pure awareness, its very essence. To merge into that own nature is what is called the self's bathing.

Three words carry the first half. Svatantra means self-ruled: joy that depends on nothing and needs no cause. Ananda is that joy. Cit is awareness, and matra says it is only that, with nothing mixed in. Sara is the sap or essence, what is left when everything else is peeled away. So the self is not something you build. At its core it is free joy and plain awareness, and the word sarvatah says this holds on every side, in every direction, in every moment. The second half names the act. Avesha is entering, or being pervaded, as when something soaks all the way through. Entering your own form, the form just described, is called snana, bathing. The text uses the washing of a pilgrim as its comparison. A bath is not an addition, it is what makes you clean by letting something surround you. The ordinary moment works as a doorway because the essence is not elsewhere. If the self is already everywhere and already joy and awareness, then any moment, opened from inside, is where the bathing can happen.

A man comes off a dusty road in the heat and wades into a river. He does not carry the water to himself or make it. It was already there on every side of him, and the step in is all that changes. The river maps to the self, already present everywhere, and the wading in maps to the merging the verse calls bathing.
