Entering Rudra's Power
Vijnana Bhairava 151
Meaning · English
Merging into Rudra's power is the true sacred ground, and the highest holding of the mind. Otherwise, for that reality, what offering is there, and who is it that is satisfied?
Three words carry this. Samavesha is entering fully: sam means together, a means into, vish means to enter. It is the word for being taken in completely, not for visiting. Kshetra is a field, a plot of ground set apart, the place where a rite happens. Bhavana is holding something in mind until it becomes how you live. It comes from the root for becoming. Rudra's power is the force of Bhairava himself. So the first line gives an answer to where worship happens: the place is the entering. Not a shrine, not a fire. The highest way of holding the mind is being inside that power. The second line asks two questions. For a reality like this, what worship would even apply? And who would be pleased by it? If the reality is the one who is worshipping, there is no outside party to receive an offering. The question dissolves the setup of giver, gift and receiver. What is left is the entering, which is already the thing worship was reaching for.
A man stands on the shore pouring cups of water toward the sea as a gift to it. Then he wades in and the sea is all around him. The cups were pointing at where he now stands. The shore is the usual idea of worship, and the wading in is the entering.
