Worship as Contentment

Vijnana Bhairava 150

Meaning · English

Here, supreme queen, the worship is a contentment whose mark is joy. It wears away every wrong, and it shelters everyone, Parvati.

Start with three words. Yaga is a ritual offering, the act of giving something into a fire. Tushti is contentment, the settled feeling of needing nothing more. Ananda-lakshana means marked by joy: joy is the sign by which you recognize it. So the offering here is not an object handed over. It is contentment, and you know it is real by its joy. Then the two results. Kshapana is wearing away, the way a stone is worn smooth. It is said to wear away every pap, every wrong or fault. Trana is shelter or protection, and it covers all beings, not only the one who sits. Bhairava calls her by two names, Parameshani, supreme mistress, and Parvati, so he is answering her directly. The logic is the text's own. A ritual normally needs a fire, a priest and materials. Here the ordinary moment of being satisfied is already the whole offering, and it was in you before any ceremony began. Nothing is added from outside. The moment is opened from inside, and that opening does the work the fire was meant to do.

Think of the end of a meal you cooked for guests. Plates are pushed back, nobody reaches for more, and the room is easy. Nothing was added at the end to make that happen. Contentment is the offering in the same way: the whole ritual is that settled, wanting-nothing moment, and the warmth in the room is its sign.
