Offering Into Emptiness

Vijnana Bhairava 149

Meaning · English

In the fire that burns in the great empty dwelling, the elements, the senses and their objects are offered, and the mind with them. That is the fire offering, poured with the ladle of awareness.

Four words carry it. Mahashunya is the great empty: not nothing, but open space where no object stands. Alaya is a dwelling, so the fire burns inside a house of emptiness. Homa is a fire offering, where something is poured into flame. Chetana is awareness, the plain fact of knowing, and it is the ladle that does the pouring. Now the clauses. Bhuta, the elements, are body and world. Aksha, the senses, are what perceives. Vishaya, the objects, are what gets perceived. All three are offered. Then comes the surprising part: the mind goes in together with them. It is not held back as the one who watches the offering. The fire is the empty dwelling, and the ladle is awareness. This works as a doorway because nothing has to be brought in from outside. Seeing, hearing and thinking are already happening. The text opens each of them from inside by handing it to awareness instead of grasping it. The ordinary moment becomes the offering, and the one making it goes into the fire too.

A woodstove with its door open. You feed it kindling, a dry leaf, an old envelope, and each goes in as itself and leaves as the same warmth. The stove is the empty dwelling, the things fed in are senses and objects, and your hand putting them in is awareness.
