Urges Worth Holding Back

Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 4.24

Meaning · English

One who seeks his own good, in this life and after it, should always hold back the urges of greed, envy, hatred, spite, passion and the like, his senses mastered.

Vagbhata has just warned that holding in the body's urges breeds illness. Now he turns the word around. There are other urges, of the mind, and these are the ones to hold. He names them. Lobha is greed, wanting more than one needs. Irshya is envy, the sting at another's good fortune. Dvesha is hatred or aversion. Matsarya is a grudging spite that cannot bear to share or to see others do well. Raga is passion, clinging attachment. "And the like" leaves the list open. The person who holds them is jitendriya, one whose senses are mastered, and hitaishi, one who truly wishes his own good. The verse gives its own reason: that good is here, in this life, and after it. In this system's terms, such states belong to rajas and tamas, which Charaka calls the mind's doshas, its own disturbances of restlessness and dullness, which unsettle the body too. What it asks is a steady habit: seeing the urge rise, and not letting it act.

1. Today, when someone's good news stings, take three slow breaths before you reply, and silently name the feeling: envy, or spite. 2. At one meal or one purchase, ask once whether you want more than you need, and stop at enough. 3. Say one sincere good word about a person you tend to begrudge. 4. Before sleep, spend two minutes recalling one moment when greed, dislike or clinging rose, and how you met it, without scolding yourself.

Today's psychology agrees that a feeling and an action are different things, and that people can learn to notice an emotion, name it and choose a response. Long-standing hostility and resentment are widely linked with a strained stress response, poorer sleep and strain on the heart, so a family doctor would recognise the link the old text draws between these states and health. One caution matters: pushing feelings down and pretending they are absent tends to make distress worse. What helps is closer to mastery than to bottling up. Rajas and tamas have no exact modern match. The promise of good after this life lies outside medicine; it is a matter of faith, shared with the Gita's warning about desire and anger and the restraints of the Yoga Sutras.
