Meaning · English

Illnesses that arise from unseen beings, poison, wind, fire, wounds, broken bones and the like, and those from passion, hatred, fear and the like, are the illnesses from outside. Giving up failures of judgment, stilling the senses, memory, knowing place, time and oneself, and following good conduct.

Vagbhata names a group of illnesses called agantu, 'arriving from outside'. They do not start as a slow imbalance within. They come in: from unseen beings (bhuta, a category the old texts take seriously), poison, wind, fire, a wound or a broken bone. Then he puts passion, hatred and fear in the same list. A surge of these strikes like a blow and does its harm quickly. Against all of them he names guards, and the next verse adds more. First, giving up prajnaparadha, 'failure of judgment': doing what you already know you should not. Then stilling the senses so they do not drag you along. Then smriti, memory: keeping in mind what you have learned, including what hurt you before. Then knowing the place, the season and your own nature. Then sadvritta, steady good conduct. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that the mind has its own doshas, restlessness and dullness, and that most harm begins with a lapse of judgment. So the same daily attention guards against a fall and against a rage.

1. Today, before one choice you half suspect is unwise, such as a late screen or a sharp reply, pause for three breaths and ask what you already know about it. 2. This evening, sit for ten minutes with the phone in another room and no music, letting your eyes and ears rest. 3. Before sleep, recall one thing this week that unsettled your body or mood, and name its cause plainly. 4. If anger or fear rises in a conversation today, speak less, lower your voice, and put off any decision for an hour.

Today's medicine also counts injuries, burns and poisoning as causes from outside, and much of their prevention is plain attention and care. It agrees that strong anger and fear act fast on the body: the stress response raises heart rate and blood pressure. Long-running stress is linked with poorer sleep and poorer health. The idea of a failure of judgment matches what doctors say about habits. A large share of preventable illness follows from choices people knew were unwise. Unseen beings have no modern match as a cause of illness. Medicine would name infection or mental illness instead. Wind as a cause has no direct match either. Fear and grief are not moral failings. Persistent anxiety, low mood or anger that will not settle deserve a doctor's care, not only self-restraint.
