Meaning · English

Always keeping to wholesome food and daily conduct, acting after careful thought, unattached to the objects of the senses, generous, even-minded, devoted to truth, forgiving, keeping company with the trustworthy: such a person becomes free of disease.

Vagbhata draws a picture of the person who stays well, and most of it is about character. Hita means what is good for you. It applies to food and to vihara, the way you spend your day: sleep, work, movement. These are kept up nityam, steadily. Samikshyakari is one who looks before acting. Unattached to the objects of the senses means enjoying taste, sound and comfort without being pulled around by them. Then come the qualities. Data is one who gives. Sama is even-minded: steady in gain and loss, and fair to all. Satyapara holds to truth. Kshamavan is patient and forgiving. Aptopasevi keeps the company and counsel of reliable, wise people. Such a person becomes aroga, without disease. The verse gives no reason. Ayurvedic texts elsewhere teach that greed, anger and haste unsettle the body as well as the mind. Charaka calls good conduct a rasayana, a rejuvenation, in itself, and the Gita praises the same evenness.

1. At one meal today, pause before eating and ask whether this food suits you now, not only whether you want it. 2. Before one reply or decision that matters, take a full breath and think through what follows from it. 3. Say nothing today that you know is untrue, including small social untruths. 4. When someone irritates you, let one thing pass without comment, and give one small thing unasked: time, help or a kind word. 5. This evening, ask one person whose judgment you trust for their view on something you are weighing.

Much of this sits well with what a good family doctor would say. Regular, sensible eating, enough sleep and daily movement are the groundwork of health. Long-running stress, hostility and resentment are linked with poorer heart health and worse sleep. Close, trusting relationships are tied to better health and a longer life, and generosity and forgiveness go with greater wellbeing. Thinking before acting prevents many injuries and regrets. Today, the trustworthy adviser also includes a qualified doctor. Where today's understanding parts ways is the promise. Good conduct lowers risk; it does not make anyone free of disease, because genes, infection, age and chance play their part. Someone who is ill or pregnant needs medical guidance on what counts as wholesome for them. The idea of the mind's own disturbing qualities has no exact modern match.
