Meaning · English

A harmful thing long practised should be given up by a quarter, or by a quarter of a quarter. The wholesome should be taken up the same way, at intervals of one, two and three. For the harmful given up, or the wholesome taken on, suddenly, in any other way than this, brings disorders of the accustomed and the unaccustomed.

Vagbhata's advice is about pace. Apathya is what is unwholesome for a person; pathya is what is wholesome. A harmful habit practised for a long time is not cut off in one stroke. It is let go a quarter at a time, or, more gently still, a quarter of that quarter. The wholesome habit comes in the same way, in small shares, with a gap of one day, then two, then three between steps, so the body settles before the next change. His reason is the second line. Satmya means what has become one's own through long use. The body has made terms with what it knows. Sudden change in either direction unsettles it: losing the familiar brings one kind of disorder, and meeting the unfamiliar brings another. So what the text asks is patience. Take a small share, hold it steady until it feels ordinary, then take the next. The Gita asks the same of the restless mind, to draw it back little by little.

1. This morning, name one habit you would like to loosen, such as a second cup of tea, the phone at bedtime, or a sharp tone at the end of a tiring day. 2. Today, trim it by about a quarter and no more. Put the phone down fifteen minutes earlier, or pour three-quarters of the cup. Leave the rest as it is. 3. Choose one good habit to add, and give it a small share, such as five minutes of quiet walking after lunch. 4. Tonight, write one line on how it went. Add nothing more tomorrow. Let a day pass before the next step.

Gradual change fits much of what is understood today. The body adapts to what it meets regularly. Digestion, appetite and the sleep rhythm all settle into routine, and a sudden shift, such as a large jump in fibre, often brings discomfort that a slower change avoids. The psychology of habit agrees: small, steady steps tend to last longer than an overhaul, and repetition is what makes a behaviour automatic. Satmya has no single modern word, but tolerance and adaptation come close. The exact quarter-steps and the one-two-three intervals are the text's own scheme, not a measured rule. One plain caution applies. Prescribed medicines should not be stopped or changed on one's own plan. Heavy drinking or regular sedative use also needs a doctor's guidance to stop safely, because stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
