Only the Body Works
Bhagavad Gita 4.21
Meaning · English
Free of expectation, with mind and intellect held in check, and every sense of ownership given up, a person who performs only bodily action incurs no sin.
Krishna names three things that make this possible. The first is nirashih, being free from expectation: no running tally of what the work should return. The second is yata-chittatma, a mind and intellect that are held in check and do not wander off to the outcome. The third is tyakta-sarva-parigraha, giving up all parigraha. Parigraha is grasping, the habit of treating things, results and even the work as mine. Then comes the odd phrase: sharira karma kevalam, only bodily action. The hands and feet do the task, and the mind does not pile greed, worry or pride on top of it. Kilbisha, the word for sin, is a stain or fault. Krishna tells Arjuna that the stain does not come from the act. It comes from the grasping that rides along with the act. Remove the grasping and the same act leaves no mark. The reason given is the problem Arjuna faces on the battlefield: he fears that action itself binds him. Krishna answers that the binding lies in the inner clinging, not in the deed. Shankara reads 'only bodily action' as the minimum needed to keep the body going, done by one who knows he is not the doer. Ramanuja reads it as the work of a seeker whose mind rests on the self. Madhva reads it as action offered to Vishnu.
A house-sitter looks after a friend's home for a month. She waters the plants, feeds the cat and sweeps the floor with real care, yet she never thinks the house is hers or lies awake over what the owner will say. The care is the work of the hands. The grasping is what she leaves at the door.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message, and set a time for it. 2. Before you begin, say quietly what you expect from it: thanks, a good result, a better mood. 3. Do the task with attention only on the hands and the next small step. When your mind runs ahead to the result, bring it back. 4. Afterward, notice for one minute whether you feel lighter or heavier than usual after such a task.
A woman sits by her father's hospital bed at two in the morning. She wipes his lips with a damp cloth, signs a form, asks the nurse a question. All the while her mind runs ahead: will he recover, will she be blamed, was this her fault. The verse would change her night in steps. The cloth, the form and the question are the bodily work, and they remain hers to do. The forecasts and the sense that his fate belongs to her are what Krishna asks to be set down. With them set down, she can do the next small thing and then the one after. Ordinary experience bears out that dread of the outcome tires a person more than the tasks themselves. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that her father recovers, that her grief will be lighter, or that a doctor's judgment can be replaced by her calm. It speaks only of how she carries the work, and of what it says clings to the one who does it.
