Meaning · English
Content with whatever comes of its own accord, risen above the pairs of opposites, free from envy, the same in success and in failure, such a person, though performing action, is never bound.
Krishna names four marks of a person whose actions leave no knot. The first is santushta, contented. The gain that counts here is the one that comes of its own accord, unasked and unchased. Such a person takes what the day brings and does not measure it against what was hoped for. The second is dvandva, a pair: heat and cold, pleasure and pain, praise and blame. To have surpassed the pairs is to stop being thrown about by each swing. The third is vimatsara, free from matsara, the sour wish that another person did not have what they have. The fourth is sama, level, in success and in failure alike. Krishna's reason is that action binds through the mind that grips it, never through the deed. Wanting more, resenting a neighbour and sinking at a loss are the ropes. When they loosen, the same work can be done and nothing sticks. Arjuna is being told that he need not choose between acting and being free. Shankara reads this as a person of knowledge who does only what keeps the body going. Ramanuja reads it as a person doing duty as a discipline, content with what duty brings. Madhva stresses that what comes is received as given by God.
A postman carries glad letters and grim ones in the same bag. He walks the same pace to every door and hands each one over. None of the news is his. The walking is his. The person this verse describes treats success and failure as letters passing through the hands, delivered faithfully and not kept.
1. Tonight, write down two things that went well today and two that went badly, one line each. 2. Read them back and notice which ones you still grip. Ask whether you did your part in each. 3. Tomorrow, when someone near you gets good news, wait ten seconds before you answer. Notice any sourness, then say one kind sentence anyway. 4. At day's end, note one thing that simply arrived, unplanned, and say thank you for it.
A father stands at a neighbour's housewarming. He had planned to buy a house this year, and the loan fell through in spring. Everyone admires the new kitchen. He feels a small, sour pull in his chest. The verse would change the moment in steps. He first notices the sourness as envy and does not pretend it is absent. He separates what is his, which is the saving, the next application and the care of his family, from what is not, which is the neighbour's luck. He then gives the neighbour honest congratulation, which costs him nothing real. On the way home he can see that the year was neither a success nor a failure in itself. It was a year in which he did his part and the outcome fell elsewhere. Ordinary experience agrees that comparing ourselves with others sours our own days and hurts the work we are trying to do. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the disappointment will vanish, that the loan will come through, or that sadness needing care from a doctor or a friend will lift by an effort of will.
