The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 4 · Action in Inaction

Action Offered as Sacrifice

Bhagavad Gita 4.23

Meaning · English

For one who has let go of attachment, who is liberated, whose mind stands steady in knowledge, and who acts only as a sacrifice, all the action he performs dissolves completely.

Krishna gives three marks of the person he is describing, then states what happens to that person's work. Sanga means clinging, the sticky hold a person has on results, people and possessions. Gata-sanga is that hold gone. Mukta means freed, loosened like a knot. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made to God, not kept for oneself. The plain sense is this: a person who is free of clinging, whose intellect rests in knowledge of the divine, and who does each task as an offering, finds that the action does not stay behind as a binding weight. Pravilinate means it melts away, dissolves, and samagram says it does so completely, with nothing left over. Krishna's reason runs through the chapter. Action binds when it is done for the doer's own gain and carries a claim on the future. Take away the claim, and the action leaves no hook. Arjuna fears that fighting will bind him. Krishna answers that the issue is not whether to act but how. He asks Arjuna to keep his attachments loose, his understanding steady, and his work given away. Shankara reads the knowledge here as knowledge of the Self, which burns up the bondage of action. Ramanuja reads the offering as service to God, with the steadiness of mind coming from that service. Madhva stresses that the offering is made to Vishnu.

A candle lit for a shrine burns all the way down. The wax is spent, the flame is given, and nothing is stored in a drawer to be counted later. Work done as an offering is like this: it is used fully, and no ledger of it is kept in the doer.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message, and before starting, say silently, 'This is my offering.' 2. Do it with full attention for its whole length, without checking for thanks or praise. 3. When it ends, notice whether you reach for credit or for a verdict on how it went. Let that reach go, and move to the next task.

A mother has spent three evenings helping her son with a hard exam. Now the results are due, and she catches herself rehearsing what she will say if he fails, and what it will say about her. The verse speaks to this moment. Krishna's teaching begins by asking what the evenings were for. If they were an offering made with care, then they were complete when she gave them, and the result is not hers to own. She can put the rehearsing down, make tea, and be ready to sit with her son whatever the marks say. The tasks she did stay done. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy defending its record has little room left for the person in front of it. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise a good result, and it does not remove her disappointment or his if the marks are poor. It speaks of how the work sits in the doer, not of what the world returns.
