The Unchanging Foundation
Prashna Upanishad 4.11
Meaning · English
Whoever knows that indestructible place where the conscious self, the vital breaths, the governing powers, and all physical elements reside, understands everything and enters all.
There is a steady base that supports everything else. The conscious self, the breaths that animate the body, the sensory powers, and the material elements all lean on this one thing. When a person recognizes this unchanging foundation, they come to know everything. Having found the one thing on which all of this rests, they have entered into all of it.
Consider a movie screen. The images of people, wind, and fire dance and change across it, but they all depend on the blank white surface to exist. The screen is like the indestructible foundation here; it remains still and unaffected while every moving part of the story relies on it for a place to be.
