The Fourth Without Parts
Mandukya Upanishad 1.12
Meaning · English
The fourth has no part, and no dealings can be had with it. The spreading world is stilled in it. It is gracious, one only, with no other. So Om is the Self itself. One who knows this enters the Self by the self.
Four words carry it. Matra means a measure, a unit. The three earlier states were each given one, the sounds a, u and m that make up Om, the spoken syllable the text uses as a sign for the whole. Amatra, then, means without measure: the fourth is not one more part beside the others. Vyavahara is dealing, the give and take of naming and using things; none can be done with it. Prapancha is the spreading out of the many-featured world, and upashama is its settling. Shiva is kind, auspicious, and advaita is not-two. After waking, dream and deep sleep, the Upanishad names what stands behind all three. It has nothing to point at or grasp, and no second thing to set against it. The text calls it the atman, the Self, the awareness each person is. Om is that Self, because the sound ends in silence. The text's reason is plain: a listener who has met three states can mistake them for everything. The last clause says the knower enters the Self by the self. Shankara reads this as no journey, since the Self was never apart; only the sense of being separate falls away.
A cinema screen when the film ends. The lit pictures go out one by one, and the plain white cloth that held every scene is still there, needing none of them. The fourth is that cloth: what remains when the spreading of things settles, never one of the scenes.
1. Tonight, before sleep, switch off the light and sit on the edge of the bed for one minute, phone out of reach. 2. Notice the small gap where one thought has ended and the next has not yet come. Do not chase it. Just notice it. 3. Say Om once, slowly, aloud, and stay with the quiet after it for five breaths. 4. If the quiet feels uneasy, stop and lie down. Try again tomorrow.
A retired schoolteacher sits on the veranda on his first morning with no bell, no register and no one waiting for him. The quiet feels like a hole. He reaches for the newspaper, then puts it down. The Mandukya would turn his attention to what the quiet is made of. Every role he held, teacher, senior colleague, the man others needed, was a spreading of names and tasks, and each was one of the measures he moved through. Now they have settled, and something is still here, aware that they are gone. The text calls that the Self, not two, kind in its nature. It asks him to see that he has not lost himself with the work, because the one who notices the loss is not the work. He stays with the veranda a little longer, and the quiet starts to feel less like a hole. The verse does not promise that missing the classroom will stop, or that the days will fill. Ordinary experience confirms only that when the noise drops, one hears what was under it.
