Deep Sleep, Measure and Merger

Mandukya Upanishad 1.11

Meaning · English

The state of deep sleep, the knower as one mass of awareness, is the letter m, the third part. It is called m because it measures, and because it is where all things merge. One who knows this measures out the whole world, and becomes the place where it dissolves.

Two Sanskrit words carry the verse. Miti comes from the root ma, to measure; it means measuring out, as grain is measured into a vessel. Apiti comes from api plus i, to go into; it means merging, dissolving back. The Mandukya gives both as reasons why deep sleep is the letter m. The sleeper here is called prajna, the one who knows in an undivided way. In deep sleep no dream or object appears, so everything is gathered into one. Plain sense: each morning the world of waking and dream is measured out from deep sleep, and each night it goes back into it. The text gives its reason for naming this third part: to show that the sound m closes the syllable, as sleep closes the day, and that what closes it is also where it begins. Then the fruit: whoever knows this is said to measure out the world and to be its place of merging. That is the Upanishad's promise, not a claim about the reader's power. Shankara reads this as the knower seeing the cause behind the world, since what the world comes from and returns to is not other than the Self. The verse asks the listener to look at sleep as the source of the other two states, not as a blank.

A potter takes a lump of wet clay from a bin, shapes pots from it through the day, and at night presses them back into the lump. Deep sleep is the lump. Waking and dream are the pots, measured out from it each morning and returned to it each night.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, notice the last thing you are aware of before sleep takes you: a sound, a thought, the weight of the blanket. 2. Tomorrow, on waking, notice the first thing that appears, and the moment the world comes back with its name, its place and its worries. 3. Once during the day, for one minute, ask where yesterday's worries were while you slept. Simply notice that they were not there. Do nothing more with it.

A night nurse comes off a double shift, sits on her bed at dawn, and cannot stop going over a patient's chart. She lies down worn out. The verse speaks to what happens next: within minutes the chart, the ward, her name and her fear are gone, and nothing in her calls for them. Step by step, the Mandukya asks her to see this as the plain pattern of every night: the world is put away, and in the morning it is laid out again. She wakes and finds the tasks are still there, but she has seen once that her mind can set them down completely. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who sleeps badly carries every worry heavier the next day, and that real sleep lightens them. The verse does not promise that she will sleep when she cannot, or that the patient will recover. It offers no remedy for insomnia, and anyone whose sleep keeps failing should see a doctor. What it gives is a way of looking at the sleep she does get.
