Dream, the Middle Letter

Meaning · English
The dreaming state, the Radiant one, is the letter u, the second part. It is called second because it rises up, and because it stands between the other two. One who knows this raises the stream of his knowing, becomes even-minded, and no one ignorant of Brahman is born in his family.
Three Sanskrit words carry the verse. Taijasa means the shining one, from tejas, light or brilliance. In dream there is no outer lamp, yet the dreamer sees whole scenes; the mind itself gives the light. Utkarsha means lifting up, rising. Ubhayatva means being of both, standing in the middle. The Mandukya Upanishad teaches that the letter u in Om, the second part, is the dreaming state, and gives two reasons for the match. In sound, u rises from the back of the mouth and lies between a and m. In experience, dream lies between waking and deep sleep, and shares something of each: it has objects like waking, and it is inward like sleep. The text then names the fruit. The one who knows this lifts up the stream of his knowledge, jnanasantati, the continuous flow of understanding. He becomes samana, even, regarding all beings alike. And no one in his family is ignorant of Brahman, the one reality the Upanishad is pointing toward. The listener is asked only to see dream as a real part of the whole of experience, neither waking nor sleep, and to hold that in mind while hearing Om. Shankara reads the fruit as belonging to the person who meditates on dream as the letter u, and takes the even-mindedness as freedom from enmity and from sharp feelings of friend and stranger.
Think of a landing halfway up a staircase, with a door to the street below and a door to the roof above. You can see through both, yet it is neither one. Dream is that landing: it has the pictures of the waking world and the quiet of sleep, and Om's middle letter stands in the same place.
1. Tonight, keep a notebook by your bed. On waking, before moving or reaching for a phone, stay still for one minute and recall any dream, even a scrap. 2. Write a line or two about it: who was there, and what lit the scene. 3. Notice that you saw a whole world with no lamp and no outside place. Hold that for a moment. 4. Do this for a week, then read the lines together.
A taxi driver finishes a night shift, sleeps badly in the afternoon, and wakes shaken by a dream in which he was late and a stranger was shouting. For a minute the dream feels like fact. Then he sits up and the room returns. The verse would change that moment in steps. He would first name the state he has just left: dream, a middle place, with its own light. Next he would see that the shouting belonged to that place and not to the day ahead. Then he could hold his waking mind a little more evenly, as the verse asks, without chasing the dream or pushing it away. Ordinary experience confirms that a bad dream can colour a morning, and that naming it often loosens its grip. The verse does not promise good sleep, does not remove the tiredness of night work, and is no replacement for a doctor when sleep is disturbed for weeks or dreams bring real distress. Its claims about knowledge flowing on and about the family are the text's own teaching, said as such.
