Waking as the Letter A

Meaning · English

The waking state, the one shared by all people, is the letter a, the first part of Om. It is first, and it reaches everything. Whoever knows this gains every desire and becomes first.

The Mandukya takes the sacred syllable Om and reads it as the Self, the atman, the one awareness behind all experience. Om has three sounds, a, u and m, and each is matched to a state of mind. Waking comes first. Three words carry the verse. Vaishvanara joins vishva, all, with nara, person, so it means common to all people. Waking is the state every living person enters, and the world seen there is held in common. Matra means a measure or part, one portion of Om. Apti means obtaining, reaching, and adimattva means being first. The text gives two reasons why waking is the letter a. The sound a reaches and fills all speech, and it also comes first. Waking is likewise first among the states and takes in the field of ordinary wants. The text then states the fruit. The one who knows this wins all desires and becomes first. Shankara reads the two reasons as the likeness that allows waking and the letter a to be seen as one. He takes the reward as belonging to the person who holds that identity in meditation, not to anyone who merely hears it. Nothing in the verse promises a particular object. It names the gain as reaching every desire and standing first.

An apartment block has one front gate. Residents of every floor, whatever their rooms hold, pass through it before anything else. The gate is the first and the shared part of the building. Waking is that gate for a person's day, and the letter a is that gate for Om.

1. Tomorrow, before you touch your phone, lie still for one minute after waking and name the first thing you want. 2. Say the sound a aloud once, slowly, with your mouth open. Notice that it needs no shaping. 3. In the evening, write down three wants from the day. Beside each, mark whether it was there at the moment of waking or arrived later.

A father sits awake at four in the morning with a newborn who will not settle. The baby wants milk and sleep. The father wants the baby quiet, then wants his own bed, then wants tomorrow to be easier. The wants arrive in a line, each as soon as the last is met. The verse reads that same hour differently. Waking is the first measure of Om, and it is common to all people. The baby, the father and the neighbour who just switched on a light all stand in the same state. Seeing it that way, he notices wanting as the ordinary texture of being awake and not as his private failing. He can answer the baby first and let the other wants wait their turn. The text also says that one who knows this reaches all desires and becomes first, which it offers as a promise tied to knowing. Ordinary experience confirms only a small part of this, that naming a want often loosens its pull. The verse does not make the night shorter or the baby calmer, and it does not replace a doctor if the baby is unwell.
