Two Kinds of Offering
Bhagavad Gita 4.25
Meaning · English
Some practitioners worship the celestial gods with their sacrifice. Others offer sacrifice into the fire of the Supreme Truth, and by sacrifice itself they make the offering.
Krishna begins listing the different ways people practise yajna. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made with intention. Yogi here means a spiritual practitioner, someone who is actually working at it, not only a person who sits in postures. The first group, Krishna says, worships the devas, the celestial gods, through ritual offerings. Their sacrifice goes outward to a named power. The second group offers sacrifice into the fire of Brahman, the Supreme Truth. The last clause is the strange one: they offer sacrifice by sacrifice. The offering and what is offered are the same thing. Nothing is held back as a separate possession to hand over. Shankara reads the second group as those who see the self and Brahman as one, so the act of offering is itself knowledge. Ramanuja reads both groups as devoted practitioners, differing in whom they take as the object of worship. Madhva stresses that all sacrifice finally reaches the Supreme, whatever name it is given. Krishna gives the reason by setting the paths side by side: people approach the same work from different places, and each is counted as a real practice. The verse asks nothing yet of Arjuna. It shows him the range, so he can see where he stands.
Two people bring water to a field. One carries a pot to a well-keeper and asks that the field be watered. The other opens the channel so the stream runs straight into the soil. The first gives to a power that stands between; the second gives where the water was always going.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message, and do it as an offering, not as a chore. 2. Before you begin, say quietly what you are giving it to: a person, a god, or simply the work itself. 3. Do it slowly, without checking your phone, until it is finished. 4. Afterward, notice whether the task felt different from the same task done for credit or to get it over with.
A man stands at the bedside of his father in a hospital at three in the morning. He has fed him, turned him, and held the cup. He is tired, and part of him keeps asking what all of it is for. Krishna's two groups offer him two ways to stand there. He can give the night to something he holds sacred, a god, a promise, a memory of his father. Or he can let the act of care be the whole offering, with nothing else asked of it. Either way the night stops being only a cost. Ordinary experience agrees that work done for a reason one honours is easier to carry than work done with resentment. The verse does not shorten the night, ease the illness, or take away the grief that waits. It does not replace the nurses or the doctor, who still need to be called when something changes. It gives the tired hours a meaning, and it leaves the choice of which meaning to the person standing there.
