Meaning · English
Some offer hearing and the other senses into the fires of restraint. Others offer sound and the other objects of the senses into the fires of the senses themselves.
Krishna lists two practices side by side. Three words carry them. Indriya means a sense, such as the ear, eye or tongue. Sanyama means restraint, a holding-in. Vishaya means a sense-object, the thing the senses reach for: a sound, a sight, a taste. The first practitioners take the senses themselves and place them in the fire of restraint. They hold the ear back from what it wants to hear, and the eye from what it wants to see. The second practitioners do the opposite. They let sounds and other objects come to the senses, but treat the meeting as an offering made into a fire, not as a snack taken for pleasure. Krishna gives no reason for choosing between them in this line. Both are called sacrifice, and the surrounding verses explain why: any discipline that is given up with awareness, as an offering, counts. The problem he is answering is how a person who must live among sights and sounds can still be free of their pull. He asks that the listener see which of the two paths fits their own life. Shankara reads the first group as strict celibate students and the second as householders who take only permitted objects. Ramanuja takes both as disciplines that serve knowledge of the self. Madhva takes them as offerings made to the Lord.
Picture a hearth at the end of the evening. One person banks the coals under ash so they cannot flare. Another feeds the fire a measured stick of wood and cooks a meal on it. Both are tending the same fire. The first is restraint, closing the senses. The second is meeting the senses' objects with attention, so that the contact is used and not merely enjoyed.
1. Choose one sense for one evening. Pick the ear, and keep the phone and television off from dinner until bed. 2. Choose one pleasure you will still have, such as tea or a song. Take it slowly, with nothing else going on, and notice when you want a second helping. 3. Before sleeping, note which of the two felt easier for you: leaving the sense unfed, or meeting it with attention.
A young man in a hostel room has an exam in the morning. His phone buzzes again, and he already knows the pull of it. Under the verse, there are two things he can do. He can put the phone in another room for two hours, which is restraint: the ear is not given the sound. Or, later, he can listen to one voice message from a friend and answer it, then stop, which is meeting the object with attention. Either is a deliberate choice, not a drift. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, so the first is easier early in the evening than late. The verse does not promise that the pull disappears, that his marks will be good, or that every sound can be dealt with this way. It does not replace sleep or help for someone whose habit has grown beyond what choice can manage. It names two honest ways of handling the senses, and gives each of them dignity.
