Meaning · English
Brahma, maker of the world and keeper of all that lives, was the first among the gods to come into being. He gave the knowledge of Brahman, on which every other kind of knowledge rests, to Atharva, his eldest son.
Angiras opens by naming a beginning. Three words carry the verse. Brahma is the first-born god, the one who makes the world (kartr, maker) and guards it (goptr, protector). Brahman is something else: the one reality the Upanishads say is behind everything. Brahma is a person in the story. Brahman is what is to be known. The knowledge of it is brahmavidya, vidya meaning knowing. Pratishtha means a footing, the ground a building stands on. The text calls this knowledge the footing of all other knowing. So Angiras says three things. The maker of the world was the first teacher. What he taught was the knowledge on which every other knowledge stands. He gave it to his eldest son, Atharva, and from there it was handed on. The reason is a matter of trust. Saunaka, a great householder, has come asking what is worth knowing. Angiras does not offer an opinion of his own. He shows where the teaching comes from and who carried it, so that Saunaka can see it was received, not invented. Shankara reads Brahma here as the first-born of creation and says the lineage is named to show this knowledge comes by tradition, not by argument. He also reads "foundation of all knowledge" to mean that every other knowledge is about things that come from Brahman, and this one is about Brahman itself.
At a festival, one lit lamp is used to light the next, and that one the next, until the whole hall glows. No lamp makes its own flame. Each is lit from another. The knowledge here travels the same way: from the first teacher, hand to hand, to whoever now stands before the flame.
1. This evening, spend five minutes on one skill you rely on, such as cooking, reading or prayer. Name the person who first taught it to you. 2. If they are alive, send them a short message or call before the week ends. Tell them one thing you still use. 3. If they are gone, say their name aloud once, quietly, while you do the task. 4. This week, show one small thing you know to someone younger, slowly, and let them do it with their own hands.
A retired bus mechanic stands beside his nephew at an open bonnet. The engine is rattling. The boy reaches for a tool. The old man says, "Listen first," and tells him that his own teacher, long dead, taught him to do it this way. The verse speaks to that moment. It says the most important knowledge is received, and it names where it came from before it says anything else. So the nephew learns the listening before the tricks. He learns it as something handed to him, with a name attached, and not as a shortcut found on a phone. The old man, in turn, knows he is a link and not the source, which makes him patient. He teaches the footing first and the repair second. Ordinary experience agrees that a skill taken from a person who cares about it tends to hold better than one picked up in pieces. The verse does not promise that the engine will be fixed, or that the boy will learn quickly. It does not say that knowing the line of teachers is the same as having the knowledge. It says only where the teaching comes from.
