Meaning · English
Hard to see, very deep, unborn, the same everywhere, clear: having known this state where nothing is many, we bow to it, each as far as our strength allows.
This is the last verse of the book, and Gaudapada ends with a bow. He names the state he has been pointing at and says what it is like. Durdarsa means hard to see. It cannot be pointed at like an object, because the one looking is already part of it. Gambhira means deep, and it has no bottom a mind can touch. Aja means unborn, the book's central claim that nothing has ever truly come into being. Samya means sameness or evenness: no part of it is higher or lower than another. Ananatva means no manyness. It is a state where difference does not hold. Gaudapada says he has known this state, and then he says we bow to it, yathabalam, according to our strength. He does not claim to have mastered it. The bow is as large as he can make it, and he says honestly that it has a size. Shankara, in his commentary, reads this as the teacher's homage after the teaching is done. The question this answers is what a person does when the teaching has been given in full and still cannot be held completely. The text's answer is to bow, not to claim a finish. It asks the listener for the same honesty: say what you have understood, and do not pretend to more.
A still lake, clear at the edge and dark in the middle. Its surface lies level in every direction, and you cannot see the bottom. You stand at the shore and lower your head to it, though you have only seen a little. The lake is the unborn, even, deep state. The bow is a reply made in proportion to your own sight.
1. Tonight, before sleep, think of one thing you understand only in part: a text, a person, a hard year. Give it two quiet minutes. 2. Say aloud, in your own words, 'This much I have understood.' Say it without adding to it. 3. Bow your head slightly, as a thank-you for the part you cannot hold. 4. Notice whether the strain to finish the understanding eases.
A woman finishes the last page of a translation she has worked on for six years. She has a pen in hand and a long list of lines she knows she did not get right. The old wish is to keep polishing, or to write a preface that claims more than she managed. Gaudapada's closing gesture offers a different last step. She names what the work points to, says she has known some of it, and puts down her pen with a bow sized to her own strength. The list of failures is still true, but it no longer decides whether she may stop. She can thank the work and her teachers, hand the pages over, and rest. The verse does not say the translation is good, and it does not remove the tiredness or the doubt. It also does not replace checking the pages with a reader she trusts. Ordinary experience does confirm one thing here: people can finish a long task more steadily when they admit its limit than when they pretend there is none.
