No covering has ever been laid on any thing. All things are clean by their own nature. From the beginning they are awake and free, and the guides say they are "awakened" in just this way. The knowledge of the awakened one does not move toward things, does not reach out and touch them. All things, and knowledge too: this is how it is told.
Three words carry the verse. Dharma means a thing, a phenomenon, whatever shows up in experience, from a root meaning to hold. Avarana is a covering, a veil laid over something. Jnana is knowing. The verse also uses buddha, awakened, from budh, to wake. Gaudapada says no thing was ever covered, so there is nothing to strip off. Every thing is clean by nature, and already awake and free from the start. The guides (nayakas, a word used for the Buddhas) call things "awakened" in this sense. Here Gaudapada speaks in the vocabulary of the Buddhist thinkers of his day and uses it fairly for his own point. Then the turn. The knowledge of the awakened one does not travel out and grip things, because there is no gap for it to cross. Knowing is not a hand reaching toward an object. The last line puts things and knowing together, and the commentators read it as saying the two are not separate. Why it is taught here: the previous verses ask how a covering could ever be removed. The answer is that it was never put on. The verse leaves the listener with one quiet thing to take in: freedom is not made by effort. It is only seen.
A window that looks dirty from the street may only be reflecting the grey sky. No wiping helps, because there is no film on the glass. The glass was clear all along. The covering is the reflection, and things are the clear glass.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you have judged as spoiled: a mistake, a stained shirt, a bad day. Look at it for one minute. 2. Ask only: what is actually here, apart from the label I gave it? Say the plain facts aloud. 3. Notice whether the label was something added afterward, and whether anything needed cleaning or only seeing. 4. Stop after the minute and go on with your evening.
A mother stands in a school corridor after a teacher has told her that her son is behind. All the way home she hears the word "behind" and starts to see it as his nature, a stain on him. Gaudapada's teaching, as the text gives it, is that nothing has ever been covered. Step by step, in that moment: she separates what was observed, such as a low mark on one test, from the label added on top. The label came afterward and was built from worry. The boy at the kitchen table is the same boy who laughed that morning. Ordinary experience confirms that a label sticks harder the more often we repeat it. Her next step is then practical. She asks the teacher what exactly he finds hard, and she sits with him over the real task. The limit: the teaching does not say the marks are wrong or that help is unneeded. If a child truly struggles to read or hear, a doctor or a specialist teacher should be asked.
