A Trace of Difference
Gaudapada Karika 4.97
Meaning · English
If even a difference the size of an atom arises, the unwise one never has non-attachment. How much less, then, can the veil fall away.
Three words carry the teaching. Vaidharmya is difference: dharma means the nature of a thing, and vi means apart, so it is the sense that this thing has a nature other than that one. Asangata is non-attachment, from a-sanga, no clinging or sticking. Avarana is the veil, from the root vri, to cover. Gaudapada says that if even an atom's measure of difference is seen as real, the unwise person has no true non-attachment. The word atom is chosen for its smallness. He does not mean only large cravings and hatreds. A faint sense that this is truly other than that is enough. Detachment practised on top of it is effort held in place, not freedom. If that is missing, the fall of the veil is further off still. The veil is the covering that hides the one unborn reality. The commentators read it as ignorance. Gaudapada teaches this at the close of his book, after saying the unborn sameness is hard to see. Things are called dharmas here, a word the Buddhist thinkers of his day also used. He asks the listener to look for the smallest remaining thread of difference, not only the large ones.
A boat lies at a jetty with its engine running and every big mooring rope thrown off. One thin line is still looped round a post. The engine roars and the boat goes nowhere. The thin line is the atom's measure of difference, and the boat is the wish to be free.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and recall one person you say you have no quarrel with. 2. Notice any small tug when you picture them doing well: a flinch, a comparison, a quiet tally. 3. Name that tug in one plain sentence, such as 'I still think of myself as apart from them.' 4. Tomorrow, say one kind, specific thing to that person, and notice whether the tug loosens.
A retired teacher sits at a family gathering. She has told everyone she let go of the old quarrel with her sister years ago, and she believes it. Then food is served, and she notices her sister was given the better chair. Something small tightens in her chest. The verse speaks to that moment. It says detachment is not measured by the large announcements. It is measured by the atom-sized flicker, and it does not wait for a large cause. Step by step: she sees the flicker, and sees it was there all along beneath the calm story. She stops treating the calm as proof, and treats the flicker as information about what she still takes to be separate. The text would call that seeing the first honest step, since the veil cannot be lifted while the trace goes unnoticed. Ordinary experience confirms that small slights often show more than large ones. The verse does not promise the flicker will vanish that evening, nor does it settle the quarrel or the hurt behind it.
