Meaning · English

Bhalabhati is done in three ways: by the left-hand order, by the reverse order, and especially by the hissing order. Done so, it keeps away the fault of kapha.

The name comes apart as bhala, the forehead, and bhati, shining. The text's own heading calls it kapalabhati, the skull-shine. Either way, the word points to a brightness at the front of the head that comes with the practice. It is the sixth and last of the cleansings in Gheranda's list. The verse says three things. First, there are three orders, or krama. Vama krama is the left-hand order. Vyutkrama is the reverse order. Sitkrama is the hissing order, named for the sound sit, which is drawn in through the teeth. The word viseshatah marks the hissing order as the one to favour. Second, it gives a reason: kapha dosha. In the tradition's account, kapha is the cool, heavy, damp tendency of the body, and a dosha is a fault or excess in it. The text claims the practice turns that excess away. The verse gives no method of its own. It names the three ways and the purpose. It asks a practitioner to see that this is one practice with three forms, and to learn each form separately.

The text's own method comes in the verses that follow. It is a slow, alternating nostril breath, with no forced bellows. That differs from the quick, pumping kapalabhati taught widely today, which is a later and separate teaching. On the body side, a gentle breath through one nostril at a time asks little of the muscles. The ribs widen and the belly softens on the inhale. The exhale is a slow release. The nose and throat are the working ground. The breath moves through the nasal passages and the back of the throat, so attention naturally sits at the front of the face, which fits the name forehead-shine. The other two orders are described by the schools that teach them as water-and-breath practices. In vyutkrama, water is drawn in through the nose and let out through the mouth. In sitkrama, the order is turned round, with the in-breath through the mouth with a hiss and the out-breath through the nose. The text printed here does not describe them. Water in the nose and throat can be taken wrongly into the airway, so they are left to a teacher. The tradition's own account is that the breath moves through the nadis, the channels of prana, and that this clears kapha. That is the tradition's reading, not physiology.

Gheranda gives one claim for bhalabhati: it keeps away the fault of kapha. That is all the verse promises. The text does not list further gifts here. The name suggests a brightness at the forehead, but the verse itself does not claim one. In the tradition's account, kapha is the dosha of heaviness and dampness, and a practice that turns it away leaves the head lighter. This is the tradition's claim, in its own terms. The text names no illness and does not promise any outcome beyond the removal of that one fault.

A choir singer stands in a cold hall at seven in the morning, breathing slowly through her nose before the first rehearsal. That is close in spirit to the gentle form of bhalabhati. What is well established is modest. Slow, steady nasal breathing is calming for most people, and it keeps attention on the face and chest. Singers and speakers use warm-up breathing for the same reason. What has no modern match is kapha. Today's medicine does not recognise a body type or fault called kapha, and there is no evidence that a breathing practice removes it. Mucus is made by the lining of the nose and chest, and it varies with weather, infection and allergy. A good family doctor would not say that breathing exercises change it. The forceful, pumping versions are another matter. Fast, hard breathing can cause light-headedness or tingling in some people, and that is not the gentle practice the text describes. The water forms need care for a practical reason: water can enter the windpipe.

This is not medical advice. A page cannot correct a breath, and a teacher can. Stop at once if you feel dizzy, short of breath, or any pain. Take particular care with high blood pressure, heart conditions, lung conditions, pregnancy, a recent operation on the belly, chest, nose or eyes, and a nose that is blocked or sore. Anyone who faints easily should leave it out, or learn a gentler form from a teacher. The water-and-hiss forms, vyutkrama and sitkrama, are not taught here. Water drawn through the nose can be breathed in wrongly, and a hiss through the teeth can be forced. Do not force the breath or hurry it. Learn them with a teacher, not from a page.
