The story · English
Parasara spoke to Maitreya of the kings who are still to come. Ripunjaya, he said, will be the last king of the line of Vrihadratha. He will have a minister named Sunika, and Sunika will kill his own master and put his son Prodyuta on the throne. After Prodyuta come Palaka, then Visakayupa, then Janaka, then Nandivardana. These five of Prodyuta's family will govern the earth for a hundred and thirty-eight years. Then Sisunaga will become king. His son will be Kakavarna, and after him Kshemadarman, Kshatraujas, Vidmisara, Ajatasatru, Darvaka, Udayashwa, another Nanrdivardana, and Mahanandi. These ten kings of Sisunaga's family will lord over the earth for three hundred and sixty-two years. So the telling begins as it will go on: a master killed by his servant, a son set up in his place, and the years counted off, one family after another.
Mahanandi will father a son by a Sudra woman, and the boy will be named Mahapadma Nanda. He will be very greedy, and he will wipe out the Kshatriyas as Parasurama once did. From that time Sudra kings will govern the earth. Mahapadma will rule as lord paramount, and his commands will be disobeyed nowhere. He will have eight sons, Sumatya and the others, and father and sons together will reign a hundred years. Then a Brahman named Kantilya will root them out and set the Maurya king Chandra-Gupta on the throne. Chandra-Gupta's line runs through Vindusara, Asokavardana, Sujasas, Dasaratha, Sangata, Salisuka, and Vrihadratha, and these Mauryas will hold the earth a hundred and seventy-three years. After them come the Sungas, whose first king, the Commander-in-Chief Pushpamitra, will kill his own master and take the throne.
Pushpamitra's line will run through Agnimitra, Sujestsha, Vasumitra, Ardraka, Pulindaka, Ghosavasu, Vajramitra, Vagabata, and Devabhuti. These ten Sunga kings will reign one hundred and twelve years. Devabhuti will be given to gambling, and his minister Vasudeva will kill him and seat himself on the throne. So begin the Kanwa kings: Vasudeva, his son Vumimitra, then Narayana, then Susarma. These four will reign forty-five years. Then a servant named Sipraka, of the Andra race, will kill Susarma, the last Kanwa, and take the throne by force. His brother Krishna will govern after him. From Krishna come Purnotsanga, Lambodara, Durlaka, Meghaswati, Paruman, Aristhakarman, Hal, Pathalaka, Prabillasen, the beautiful Satakarni, and on down the line to Pulomarchi. Thirty Andhra kings in all will govern the earth for four hundred and fifty years.
After the Andhras the earth will pass through many hands. Seven kings of the Avira race will rule, then sixteen of the Gardavila, then sixteen Saka kings. After them come eight Yavana kings, fourteen Tukhara, thirteen Munda, and eighteen Manu kings, who together rule thirteen hundred and ninety-nine years. Then eleven Paura kings hold the earth three hundred years. When the Pauras have spread everywhere, the Yavanas of Kailakila will become kings, and Viridhyasakti will be the greatest of them. His son is Paranjaya, and the line goes on through Ramchandra, Dharma, Varanga, Kritamandana, Sashinandi, Nandiyasa, Sisaka, and Pravira. These nine reign a hundred and sixty years. More kings follow, from Valheeka, Saptakosala, and Nishdha. Then comes a king of Magadha, Viswasphatika, who will create many mixed castes, root out the Kshatriyas, and lift fishermen, barbarians and others to power.
Parasara then named who would hold which lands. The nine Nagas will reign in Padmavati, Kantipuri, and Mathura, and the Guptas of Magadha along the Ganges as far as Prayaga. Devarakshita will rule from a city on the sea shore over the Kosalas, Pundras and Tamraliptas. The Guhas will hold Kalinga and the mountains of Mahendra, and other peoples will take Saurashtra, Avanti, Arbuda, Marubhumi, Kashmir, and the banks of the Chandrabhaga. Of all these kings together, he said, they will be rough in spirit, quick to anger, and always given to lies and wickedness. They will kill women, children and cows. They will seize their subjects' property. Their power will be small, they will rise and fall quickly, and their lives will be short. They will hope for much and gather very little virtue. Their peoples will take on the same nature.
Wealth and virtue will shrink day by day, Parasara said, until the whole world is corrupt. Wealth will be the proof of good birth and goodness. Passion will be the only bond of marriage, and lying the way to win a lawsuit. Women will be only objects of pleasure. The earth will be honored for the minerals in it. The sacred thread will be the only sign of a Brahman, and outward marks the only difference between the orders. Wickedness will be the way to make a living. People will depend on others because they are weak, and study only because they are threatened. Giving will count as virtue, and being rich as honesty. A bath will count as purity, mutual consent as marriage, good clothes as proof of an honest man, and water from far away as a holy spring. Then the strongest man among them will be king.
The kings will grow greedy, Parasara said, and the people, unable to bear the many taxes, will flee to the valleys of the mountains. They will be glad to live on wild honey, herbs, roots, fruits, flowers and leaves. Bark will be their only clothing, and they will stand exposed to cold, wind, sun and rain. No one will live past twenty-three years. So at the end of the Kali Yuga most of humankind will be destroyed. When the rites of the Vedas and the laws are nearly gone, a portion of the divine being who made the universe, who is the beginning and end of all, will come down to earth. He will be born in the house of Vishnuyasas, a great Brahman of the village of Sambhala, and he will be Kalki, gifted with the eight superhuman powers.
By his unstoppable power Kalki will slay all the Mlechchhas and thieves and everyone given to sin. His greatness and might will be unobstructed. He will set virtue on the earth again, and when the Kali Yuga closes, the people who remain will wake, their minds clear as crystal. Those purified people will be the seed of humankind, and their children will follow the laws of the Krita age. A verse is recited of this: when the sun, the moon, the star Tishya and Jupiter stand together in one mansion, the Krita age returns. Parasara then gave the count. From the birth of Parikshit to the crowning of Nanda, 1065 years pass. The Kali Yuga began when the portion of Vishnu born among the Yadus went back to heaven. While his lotus feet touched the earth, Kali could do nothing. When he left, Yudhishthira and his brothers gave up the kingdom, saw evil omens, and crowned Parikshit. The Kali Yuga lasts 360,800 human years, and after twelve hundred divine years the Krita age comes back.
Thousands of Brahmans, Kshatriyas, Vasyas and Sudras have passed away, Parasara said, and to name them all would be useless repetition, so he did not. Two are still living: Devapi of the Puru race and Maru of the Ikswaku race, who by their great austerity dwell in the village of Kalapa. When the Krita age begins they will come to the city and found the Kshatriya dynasties again. One of them remains through the Kali Yuga as seed for the renewed generations. To tell all the families fully would take a hundred lives. The kings named, and others, took frail bodies and ruled this lasting world, bound by illusion, thinking, "This earth is mine, it is my son's, it belongs to my dynasty." They have all gone. Those before them, those after them, and those yet to come have ceased or will cease. The earth, in her autumn flowers, seems to smile at a king eager for war. The sage Asita told King Janaka what Earth herself once said.
"How wrong the princes are," said Earth, "who think themselves immortal when they are only foam on a wave. Before they have mastered themselves they try to master their ministers, servants and subjects, and then their enemies. They say, 'Soon we shall conquer the sea-girt earth.' With such thoughts filling their minds they cannot see death coming. Conquering the earth is not so hard for one who has conquered himself, for freedom is another fruit of self-control. Kings want to own me out of ignorance, though their forefathers had to leave me and their fathers could not keep me. Fathers fight sons and brothers fight brothers to hold me. When a king sends word through an envoy, 'This earth is mine, give up your claim,' I laugh at first, and then the laughter turns to pity for the fool." Parasara told Maitreya that ambition melts at these verses like snow in the sun. Hearing of Manu's family purifies the heart and removes sins. Ikshawku, Mindhata, Sagara, Raghu, Yayati, Nahusha, Pritbu, Kartavirya and Mandhata are now only stories. Of Rama, Lakshmana and Yudhishthira the verse asks, "Have they really existed? Where are they now? We know not." The wise man who knows this will not cling even to his own self, let alone to children, lands and wealth.
