The story · English

Parasara began with the family of the Kurus. Parikshit had four sons: Janamejaya, Srutasena, Ugrasena and Bhimasena. From Jahnu's son Suratha the line ran down through Viduratha, Sarvabhauma, Jayasena Aravin, Ayutayus and Akrodhana. One of Akrodhana's sons was Devatithi, another was Riksha. Riksha's son was Dilipa, and Dilipa's son was Pratipa. Pratipa had three sons: Devapi, Santanu and Bahlika. Devapi went to live in the forest while still a child, so Santanu became king. A verse about him is recited across the earth: he is called Santanu because, if he lays his hands on an old man, that man is made young again, and through him people find peace. Yet in his kingdom no rain fell for twelve years, and the whole land was close to ruin.

Seeing his kingdom about to be laid waste, Santanu called all the Brahmans together. "Why does the god not send rain to my kingdom?" he asked. "What fault have I committed?" They told him he was like a younger brother who had married before his elder, because he was ruling a kingdom that belonged to Devapi. "What am I to do?" said the king. The Brahmans answered, "As long as the Brahmans have no quarrel with Devapi for straying from the path of righteousness, the kingdom is his. Give it to him." But the king's minister Amarisarin heard this. He gathered ascetics who taught against the Vedas and sent them into the forest. They found Devapi, bent the mind of the simple prince, and led him into false beliefs.

When the Brahmans told Santanu of Devapi's offence, he was deeply pained. He sent them ahead into the forest, then went there himself to give the kingdom back to his elder brother. The Brahmans reached Devapi's hermitage and told him that, by the Vedas, succession to a kingdom is the right of the elder brother. Devapi argued with them and set out many reasons against the Vedas. The Brahmans turned to Santanu and said, "Come away, king. You need not trouble yourself further. The drought is over. This man has fallen from his place, for he spoke with disrespect of the Veda, which is eternal and was made by no one. When an elder brother falls, his younger brother is not at fault for marrying first." Santanu went home and ruled as before. Indra poured down rain, and the harvests were rich.

Bahlika's son was Somadatta, who had three sons: Bhuri, Bhurisravas and Sala. Santanu's son by the holy Ganga was Bhishma, the famous and learned. By his wife Satyavati Santanu had two more sons, Chitrangada and Vichitraviryya. Chitrangada was killed young in battle with a Gandharbha who bore the same name. Vichitraviryya married Amba and Ambalika, daughters of the king of Kasi. He gave himself too much to pleasure, fell ill with consumption and died. Then, at Satyavati's command, my son Krishna-Daipayana, always obedient to his mother, fathered children on his brother's widows: Dhritarashtra and Pandu. On a servant woman he fathered Vidura. Dhritarashtra had a hundred sons, among them Duryodhana and Dushasana.

Pandu had killed a deer's mate while hunting, and the deer's curse kept him from having children. So his wife Kunti bore three sons by the gods: Yudhishthira by Dharma, Bhima by Vayu, and Arjuna by Indra. His wife Madri bore Nakula and Sahadeva by the Aswins. Each of the five had a son by Draupadi: Prativindhya, Srutasoma, Srutakirti, Satanika and Srutakarman. They had other sons too, among them Devaka, Ghatotkacha, Sarvatraga, Suhotra, Niramitra, Iravat and Babrubabana. Arjuna's son Abhimanyu, by Subhadra, was famed for his courage even as a boy. His son by Uttara was Parikshit. After all the Kurus had been destroyed, Aswathama's weapon struck Parikshit in his mother's womb and killed him. By the mercy of Krishna, whom gods and demons bow to, and who took human form for his own delight, he was brought back to life. This Parikshit now rules the earth, and no one disputes it.
