The story · English

Parasara began by saying he would first name the descendants of Yadu, the eldest son of Yayati. In this family, he said, a portion of Vishnu came down to live among people. Its glory cannot be told in full, though it were chanted forever. It gives every being what they long for, whether virtue, wealth, pleasure or release. That includes men and saints, nymphs and serpents, birds and demons, sages and ascetics. Whoever hears of the descendants of Yadu is freed from every wrong they have done. For Vishnu, the supreme spirit who has no form of his own, took a body in this house. Yadu had four sons: Sahasrajit, Kroshti, Nala and Raghu. The eldest had a son, Sasajit, and Sasajit had three sons: Haihaya, Venu and Haya.

The line ran down from Haihaya. His son was Dharmanetra, and after him came Kunti, Sahanji, Mahishmat, Bhadrasona, Dardama and Dhanaka. Dhanaka had four sons: Kritaviryya, Kritagni, Kritayarman and Kritauyyas. Kritaviryya's son was Aryunu, who is also called Kartavirya. He became king of the seven island continents, and he was master of a thousand arms. Before all that, he sought out the sage Dattatreya, a descendant of Atri and himself a portion of Vishnu, and won his favor. The sage granted him boons, and the king asked for each one with care. First, a thousand arms. Second, that he would always act justly and govern the world with justice, protecting everyone alike.

He asked also for victory over his enemies, and for a death that would come only from a man famous in all three worlds. Dattatreya gave him all of it. With these gifts the king ruled the earth with great power, and he ruled it justly. He performed ten thousand sacrifices. Of him a verse is still spoken: "The kings of the earth shall never equal him in sacrifices, in generosity, in devotion, in good manners and in self-control." In his reign nothing was lost and nothing was harmed. For eighty-five thousand years he held the whole earth, and his health, his wealth, his strength and his power never faded.

Once Ravana came to the city of Mahismati, on a tour of conquest. He was proud, for he had beaten the gods, the demons and the Gandharvas, and even their king. But the king of Mahismati was away, playing in the waters of the Narmada, flushed with wine. Kartavirya took Ravana prisoner. He kept him in a corner of his capital like a tame beast, and there Ravana stayed. At the end of his long reign, the death Dattatreya had promised came for Kartavirya. Parasurama, himself a portion of Vishnu, killed him. The one who had held the earth for so many years was slain by the man whose fame filled the three worlds.

Kartavirya left a hundred sons, among the chief of them Surasena, Vrishana, Madhu and Jayadwaja. Jayadwaja's son was Talajangha, who had a hundred sons, all called the Talajanghas. The eldest was Vilipotra. Another was Bharata, who had two sons, Vrisha and Sujati. Vrisha's son was Madhu, and Madhu had a hundred sons. The chief of them was Vrishna, and from him the family took the name Vrishni. From their father Madhu they were called the Madhavas. And from Yadu, the ancestor they all shared, they were all called the Yadavas.
