The story · English
King Nahusha had six brave sons: Yati, Yayati, Sanyati, Ayati, Viyati and Kriti. When the time came for one of them to take the throne, Yati declined it, and so Yayati became king. He had two wives. One was Devayani, the daughter of Usanas. The other was Sarmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan. Devayani gave him two sons, Yadu and Turvasu. Sarmishtha gave him three: Druhya, Anu and Puru. Then, because of a curse from Usanas, Yayati became old and decrepit before his time. He went to his father-in-law and asked his forgiveness, and Usanas relented. The old age could not be taken away, but Yayati was given permission to pass it to anyone who would willingly accept it.
Yayati called his eldest son, Yadu, and said, "Your mother's father has brought this early old age on me. By his permission I may pass it to you for a thousand years. I am not yet satisfied with the pleasures of the world, and I want to enjoy them through your youth. Do not refuse me." Yadu would not agree to take on his father's decay. Yayati cursed him: "No one in your line shall ever be king." Then he asked Druhya, then Turvasu, then Anu, and each of them refused in turn. He cursed each of them as well. Four sons had been asked, and four had turned away from an old man's plea.
Last of all, Yayati called Puru, the youngest, the son of Sarmishtha, and asked him the same thing. Puru was young, but his understanding was ripe. He agreed at once. He bowed to his father and said, "I have been highly honored." Then he took his father's infirmities upon himself and gave Yayati his own youth in exchange. With his strength restored, Yayati ruled the kingdom for the good of his people. He took the pleasures that suited his age and strength, and he kept to what was right. He also spent his days and nights with a nymph named Vishwachi, believing that enough enjoyment would bring his desires to an end.
It did not turn out that way. The more Yayati enjoyed, the more pleasant everything seemed to him, and he began to understand why. He said, "Desire is never satisfied by enjoying. Fed with oil, a fire only burns hotter. No one is satisfied with barley, gold, cattle or women, so give up this excessive craving. When a man harbors no ill will toward any creature and looks on all with an equal eye, he finds everything full of delight. The wise become happy by letting go of the desire that the weak-minded cannot abandon, the desire that does not grow old even when we do. The hair turns gray and the teeth fall out, but the love of wealth and of life is never satisfied."
Yayati went on: "A thousand years have passed, and my mind is still tied to worldly pleasure. Every day new things stir my desire. So I will give up all enjoyment of the senses and give myself to spiritual truth. I will drop every attachment, stay unmoved by pleasure and pain, and roam the forest with the deer." He returned Puru's youth to him and took his own old age back. He made Puru king and went to Tapovana, the wood of penance. Before leaving he appointed viceroys: Turvasu in the south-east, Druhya in the west, Yadu in the south, and Anu in the north. Puru he made supreme monarch of the earth.
