Pururavas had six sons: Ayus, Dhimat, Amavasu, Viswavasu, Satayus and Srutayus. Down the line of Amavasu came Bhima, then Kanchana, then Suhotra, also called Jahnu. One day Jahnu was performing a sacrifice when the Ganga flooded the whole place with her waters. He was offended, and his eyes went red with anger. He joined the spirit of the sacrifice to himself, and by the strength of his devotion he drank the river dry. The celestials and the sages came and pleased him, and they got Ganga back, now as his daughter. Jahnu's line went on through Sumanta, Ajaka, Valakaswa and Kusa. Kusa had four sons: Kusamba, Kusanabha, Amurttaya and Amayasu. Kusamba took up hard penances, wishing for a son as great as Indra.

Indra saw how strong Kusamba's devotion was. He feared that a prince as powerful as himself might truly be born, so Indra took birth as Kusamba's son. The boy was called Gadhi, or Kausika. Gadhi had a daughter named Satyavati, and Richika, a descendant of Bhrigu, wanted to marry her. The king did not want to give his daughter to a peevish old Brahmin. So he named a price: a thousand fast horses, each white with one black ear. Richika went to Varuna, god of the ocean, and won his favor. At the holy place called Awatirtha, Varuna gave him a thousand such horses. Richika handed them to the king, and the king gave him Satyavati as his wife.

Richika wanted a son, so he prepared a dish of rice, barley and pulse with butter and milk for his wife to eat. At her request he made a second dish for her mother, so that her mother might bear a warrior prince. He gave both dishes to Satyavati, told her which was hers and which was her mother's, and went off to the forest. When it was time to eat, her mother said to her: "Daughter, everyone wants a son with great qualities, and no one wants to be outdone by his mother's brother. Give me the food your husband set aside for you, and take mine. My son is meant to rule the world. And what use are wealth, strength and prowess to a Brahmin?" Satyavati gave her own food to her mother.

Richika came back from the forest, looked at Satyavati, and said: "Sinful woman, what have you done? Your body looks fearful to me. You have eaten the food meant for your mother. That was wrong. I had filled your mother's dish with power, strength and heroism. I had filled yours with a Brahman's gentleness, knowledge and resignation. Because you swapped them, your son will live as a warrior, taking up weapons, fighting and killing. Your mother's son will be born with a Brahmin's desires, devoted to peace and piety." Satyavati fell at her husband's feet. "I did it out of ignorance," she said. "Please be kind, so that I do not have such a son. If it cannot be avoided, let my grandson be like that, not my son." Richika answered, "So be it."

Satyavati gave birth to Jamadagni, and her mother gave birth to Viswamitra. Satyavati later became the Kausiki river. Jamadagni married Renuka, daughter of Renu, born in the line of Ikshwaku. Their son was Parasurama, who destroyed the Kshatriya race. He was a portion of Narayana, the preceptor of the universe. The celestials gave Sunasepha to Viswamitra as a son, and he became known as Devarata. Viswamitra had other sons too: Madhuchandra, Yaya, Kritadeva, Devashtaka, Kachapa and Hareetaka. They founded many families, all known as the Kausikas, and those families married into the families of many Rishis.
