The story · English

Budha had a son named Pururavas, born to Ila. He grew into a prince known for his generosity, his devotion, his splendor, his love of truth, and his beauty. Urvasi, a nymph of heaven, had been cursed by Mitra and Varuna, and she made up her mind to live among mortals. She came down to earth and saw Pururavas. The moment she saw him she forgot all reserve. She no longer cared for the comforts of heaven. He looked at her and found her far above all other women in beauty, grace, and delicacy, and he loved her just as much. Neither of them could think of anything else. The king spoke plainly: "Fair woman, I love you. Have pity on me, and return my affection."

Urvasi turned her face away a little, out of modesty. "I will," she said, "if you keep my conditions." "What are they?" asked the king. "Speak them." "I have two rams that I love like my children. They must be kept by my bed, and no one may carry them off. You must never let me see you undressed. And clarified butter alone will be my food." The king agreed at once. They lived together for sixty-one thousand years in Alaka, wandering the groves and the lotus lakes of Chaitraratha. Her love grew every day, and she forgot heaven. But heaven felt empty without her. The celestials, nymphs, and Gandharvas found it had lost its beauty, and the Gandharvas decided to break her bond with the king.

They sent Viswasvasu, who knew the terms of her promise. He came by night to the room where the couple slept and carried off one of the rams. Its cries woke Urvasi. "Who has stolen one of my children?" she cried. "If I had a husband, this would not happen. Who will help me?" The king heard her, but he could not rise, for he was undressed and she would see him. The Gandharvas took the second ram. Again she wept: "I have no husband. I have taken shelter with a coward." Thinking it was dark, the king seized a dagger and ran after them, shouting, "Stop, you wretches. I will kill you." At once the Gandharvas filled the room with a blinding flash of lightning, and Urvasi saw him naked.

The condition was broken, and she vanished. The Gandharvas left the rams behind and went back to heaven. The king, glad to have the rams, carried them to his bedroom and found it empty. He wandered the world naked, like a madman. At last, at Kurukshetra, he saw Urvasi playing with four other nymphs beside a lotus lake. He ran to her, crying, "My wife, wait. Speak to me, you with the iron heart." She answered, "Great king, this is useless. I am pregnant. Go now, and come back in a year. I will give you a son, and stay with you one night." He went home comforted. She told her companions, "This is the man whose love kept me so long." They said, "His beauty is great. We could live happily with him forever." A year later he returned, and she gave him a son named Ayus.

Urvasi stayed with him one night and became pregnant again, with five sons. She said, "The Gandharvas, out of regard for me, will grant you a boon. Ask." The king said, "My enemies are dead, my powers are strong, and I have friends, armies, and treasure. I want only to live with Urvasi, always." The Gandharvas brought him a vessel of fire. "Divide this into three, as the Vedas teach, and make offerings for Urvasi. Your wish will be granted." In the forest he realized he had brought the fire but not Urvasi, and he left the vessel there. At midnight he went back for it and found it gone. Where it had lain, an Ashwattha tree grew from a Sami plant. He took the wood home and cut sticks as many inches long as the Gayatri has syllables. He rubbed them together while reciting the verse, and fire came. He divided it into three and made offerings, and through many sacrifices reached the Gandharvas' world and was never parted from Urvasi again. So the one fire became three in this Manwantara, through the son of Ila.
