The story · English

Maitreya had heard about the kings of the sun. Now he asked Parasara to tell him of the kings of the moon, whose glorious deeds are still remembered. Parasara agreed. He said this family had given the earth many famous rulers, men of strength, valour, prudence and energy, such as Nahusha, Yayati and Kartavirya. It began with Atri, a son of Brahma. Brahma himself had come from the lotus that grew out of Narayana's navel. Atri's son was Soma, the moon, and Brahma made him king of plants, of Brahmans and of the stars. That was a great honour, and it was where the trouble started.

Soma performed a Rajasuya sacrifice. The glory it brought him, and the vast sovereignty he now held, made him proud and licentious. He carried off Tara, the wife of Vrihaspati, the teacher of the gods. Vrihaspati asked for her back, and then asked again and again. Brahma commanded Soma to return her. The holy sages remonstrated with him. Soma would not give her up. Then others took sides. Usanas, an enemy of Vrihaspati, stood with Soma. Rudra had been a pupil of Angiras, Vrihaspati's father, and so he stood with his fellow student, Vrihaspati.

Because Usanas was their teacher, Jambha, Kujambha and all the Daityas and Danavas, the old enemies of the gods, came to help Soma. Indra and the other gods came to help Vrihaspati. A terrible battle followed. Because it was fought over Tara, it is called the Tarakamaya, the war of Tara. The gods, led by Rudra, hurled their weapons at the Asuras, and the Asuras overwhelmed the gods with theirs. The whole universe was crushed under the fighting. It went to Brahma for protection.

Brahma told Usanas and the demons to stop, and told Rudra and the gods to stop. He ordered that Tara be given back to Vrihaspati. Vrihaspati saw that she was pregnant. He told her she must not keep the child she carried. She obeyed, and gave birth to a son, and left him in a clump of tall Munja grass. As soon as he was born his radiance showed that he was divine. Vrihaspati and Soma both looked at the boy, enchanted by his beauty. The gods wanted to know whose son he was.

They asked Tara, "Whose son is he? Is he Vrihaspati's or Soma's?" Tara was ashamed and said nothing. They asked again and again, and she stayed silent. The child grew angry and was about to curse her. "Unless you speak out at once and say who my father is, I will punish you for your useless shame. No woman after this will ever speak the truth." Brahma stepped in and calmed the child. Then he asked Tara, "Tell me, my daughter, is this child Vrihaspati's or Soma's?" "Soma's," said Tara, blushing. Soma's face shone with joy. He embraced his son and said, "Well done, my boy. You are wise." And so the boy was named Budha.
